Ok, first of all I am not familiar with classification of different types of "metal" music, so maybe what I am looking for is not strictly "heavy metal". Still, since we have a number of metalheads here, I thought I'd ask for a recommendation.

So, I am generally not too fond of metal music per se, however there is a particular type I like, which I'd call "symphonic" or "operatic" metal....

Nightwish.

All you ever need is "The Wizard" by Black Sabbath, and then everything else will follow...

Oooh, good choice.

But Nightwish would suit marty's....eclecticism the most.

:bleeding: Tarja. New girl's OK, though.

Sounds like "Gothenburg" metal/rock is what you're looking for, really. Lacuna Coil and Leaves Eyes would probably fit the bill for you. Kamelot is somewhat lacking in female counterparts, but Roy Khan is operatically trained and they come up with some interesting arrangements. In an offshoot of that, you might want to try out some actual "opera metal," where Epica is a good place to start.

Indeed.  The though of Marty...doing WHATEVER it is that he actually does to conform to his lifestyle while listening to Old School Black Sabbath makes me want to don Spandex & sweat to the oldies...

Isn't that song in Vampire - The Masqerade?

Saw them live once. Wasn't bad. Local radio station plays their cover of "Enjoy the Silence" now and then.

Try Metallica, Mart. Though not orchestral, construction of their songs is very much like classical music. They did do a live album with a symphony orchestra, but I disapprove of that kind of thing. Check out "One" on YouTube.

Yeah, that was how I heard of them, originally.

Hey, I listened to a fair bit of metal in my "occult" phase. I've just never got into the subculture because I was annoyed by an average metalhead's lack of erudition.

I mean, a lot of these bands chose names and titles for their songs from occultism or mythology (Therion, Morgoth, etc.), lyrics were often referring to occult or mystical concepts but their fans were completely clueless about it. Gnngh.  :frusty:

Occultism is very lame.
Not more lame than religion, and it gets you more sex.
