MADRID — Spanish bullfighter Juan Jose Padilla is recovering from a five-hour operation to repair his face after a terrifying goring in the northeastern city of Zaragoza, the hospital that treated him said Saturday.

Television images showed the moment when the bull's left horn ripped into Padilla's lower jaw to emerge beside his protruding eyeball as spectators screamed in horror.

Padilla, 39, suffered eye, bone, muscle and skin damage when the bull pinned him to the ground and gored him, the statement said.

TV footage also showed Padilla getting up from the ring, his face gushing blood, as the bull was distracted by bullring assistants.

"I can't see, I can't see anything," the matador shouted as he was rushed to emergency facilities at Zaragoza's Misericordia bullring before being driven to the city's Miguel Servet Hospital for surgery.

The bull, named Marques, weighed 508 kilograms (1,120 pounds) and was the second fighting beast Padilla had faced during the second day of the annual Virgen del Pilar festivities in Zaragoza.

Surgeons used titanium plates and mesh to reconstruct parts of Padilla's facial bone structure and eye socket, doctors Simon Sanz and Nadal Cristobal said in a very detailed, signed statement.

A hospital spokesman told The Associated Press that surgeons had tried to reconstruct the bullfighter's left ocular nerve.

Padilla was lucky the horn did not penetrate his brain, said Vicente Yesteras, one of Padilla's retinue of bullring helpers.

This is why bullfighting is OK as a sport.  Every once in a while, the bull wins.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

They still lose.  They get butchered afterwords.  I wonder if they butcher and eat the matador if he loses.  Btw, wasn't this the guy who was the "Dirty Bomb" guy back a few years ago?  It's nice to see he has steady work now.

The bull is going to get slaughtered whether it goes into the ring or not.  It would have to feel nice to take the guy in the brightly colored idiot suit out with you.

It is a goofy suit.  I really don't care much what a cow thinks though.

Really?  The Bull tends to get wounded a lot in the process.  They jab it with a bunch of spears before the Matador goes in for the kill.

That is my understanding.

But my source is Hemmingway, who was writing about bullfighting in the 1930's. 

He also claimed that if a bull puts up a particularly inspriing fight the crowd can lobby for him to be spared before he gets a sword in the heart.

Yeah, I seem to recall that as well.  I read Death in the Afternoon too.  Still, before anti-biotics, a bunch of spears in the back was probably fatal.  It is curious how he supported the Reds who were kind of luke warm on bull fighting over Franco who heavily promoted it.  Incidentally, I remember reading that For whom the Bell Tolls, Hemingway's other bull fighting themed book, was a favorite novel of both John McCain and Barak Obama.
