You need to have the current version of SKSE.  Old versions crash the game when a mod makes a script call that's not in the old version.  Most mods will complain if you dn't have the version they require, but not all of them do that.

Mod-cleaning is generally not necessary for stability (it may slightly help speed), but if you are doing it, it doesn't hurt.

And, yeah, sorters are always excellent.  :)  Not as essential as auto harvest, but probably more essential than anything else.

Technically, my save games should be compatible.  Will they be, though?  I hope so.

Not necessarily as save games contain traces of all the mods you had installed previously, particularly those containing scripts.  You will know right away if you attempt to load a save and get the mesg that it contains elements no longer present.  This will in time corrupt your saves.  If you are starting anew you are better to launch a new game entirely.  I don't know the specs of your system but you should also make sure to have the ENB booster (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/38649/?) and well as the SSME (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50305/?) installed.  All those and more are detailed in the STEP documentation.

I'm pretty sure I had the latest version, and it's got to be one of those house mods I added that created me problem, probably conflicting with one another.
Anyhow, S.T.E.P. made me clean the official DLC esp also.  Maybe there was compatibility problem there.

I only do it when recommended by S.T.E.P.

Auto harvest you say?  I'll have to check on that... :)

What I find frustrating is some mods name are slighlty confusing.  Say "children death" mod, while in fact it does much much more than simply make kids killable.  And "X32 Skeleton animation", wich I thought was some mod to make skeleton foes harder to kill, while in fact it is a complete remodeling of all the character's skeletons to make them look more natural...

The mods sure make the game better, but I'm a little worried that some of these mods (SkyUI, namely) where even necessary in the first place.  Are all Bethesda game like that?

I inted to reinstall all the mods I previously had, save for Water, wich I had to replace by another one.
So, that should cover grounds.  Haven't played since then.

Yeah, modding Skyrim to perfection can take days. :D

I started tuesday night.  It's Friday and I still haven't played yet!  <_<

Every Bethesda-developed game has had a UI upgrade for the PC.  Starting with Oblivion, they were fairly significant, because the Bethesda UI is designed for consoles.

Mod names are a pain, and its even worse when you get to the download package name.  "Main package" may be fine when you are just using one mod, but when you have dozens, it is confusing as hell.

BTW, you are using FNIS http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/11811/? if you are changing skeletons and animations, right?  That's almost always required, and it never hurts to run it once in a while even if you don't think you have changed any animations.

Yes Grumbler, thank you, I am already using FNIS, it was required for S.T.E.P.

There's still something conflicting, I don't know what, but I still have a lot of CTD.

I read there's a memory patch for SKSE, but elsewhere, I've read it's already incorporated in the lastest SKSE... I don't really know...

I'll have to check on S.T.E.P. forum.

Here's another place for what seems like pretty good advice on stability in the game: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/32363/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D32363%26preview%3D&pUp=1

I just found it, so can't say that I've used his advice successfully, but he sounds like he knows what he is talking about.

Sorry you are having these problems.  My game has always been incredibly stable, and I was thinking Bethesda finally figured it out, but it appears I am just fortunate.

Norgy

Ever since the patch where memory above 4 GB (or was it 2?) could be utilised, Skyrim's been fairly stable as long as I remember to update my mods and patches.

The only consistent CTD is trying to save during the Daedric quest at Nightcaller Temple. That just needs to be completed with no saving.

You haven't been paying attention...  I already told you what to do Vip!

SKSE is a must
The memory patches are a must
Cleaning you mods is a must
Reading the description of the mods you install in order to determine what is compatible with what is a must
If you are using a general overhaul mod like  SkyRe or Requiem compatibility watch is a must
Finally sorting your LOAD order is a must

STEAM allows you to make a backup of the base game - do so!
Mod Organizer allows you to make backups of your current mod setup - do so!

In fact you should show us you load order that would help.

It's most likely one of the mods I use or used that is conflicting.  Or maybe I'm just using too much memory with the new&improved textures.

I'm too far gone (only the main quest and DragonBorne to do now) to start over a new game, but once I'm finished, I am deleting everything and reinstalling Skyrim, than all the mods, even the silly ones like the nude males step by step.

I'm pretty sure I made a mistake somewhere, not paying enough attention.  Anyway, I can't rule it out.  My problems started with the latest batch of mods I installed on Nexus Mod manager, before I started over with Mod Organizer.

Thank you for the link, I will check that tomorrow.

Some should not be cleaned, they are intended to be "dirty" on purpose.
I have cleaned those S.T.E.P. recommended me to clean.

As I said, I am following the instructions from here:

The visuals are impressive.

How do I do that without retyping everything?  Is there an option in LOOT or Mod organizer?

With a regular setup you will find the file here:

C:\Users\Grallon\AppData\Local\Skyrim

With Mod Organizer you will find it here:

C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Mod Organizer\profiles\STEP Default

-----

If you are using Immersive Armors/Weapons you need to run the ReProccer (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/28467/?) every time you modify your load order.  The more graphic mods you have the more your processor is used, the faster you run out of memory.  I suggest you install Memory Blocks Log to view the usage of your memory (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50471/?#).  You can also try the Skyrim Performance Monitor which runs in real time while you're playing (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/6491/?).
