That can in fact be quite a problem.

In order to make out a conviction you have to prove that ther person depicted is, or appears to be, under the age of 18 on a standard of "proof beyond a reasonable doubt".  Lots of charges are withdrawn, or never laid in the first place, because the age of the subject is ambiguous.  Also, there is a large "legitimate" market for 'barely legal' porn.

You are entitled to look at all of the circumstances and evidence.  That incldues the image itself of course, but also the file name, where and how it is stored, and other documentary evidence from the computer.  So, an image itself may be arguable, but if the file name is 13yogirl.jpg stored under the directory /childporn, you can probably get a conviction.

PLus of course lots of child porn leaves you with no doubt that the subject is well under the age of 18.

I guess, depending on the scale of the case, you could also get two experts in to clear it up- a digital photo editing expert to testify that the image hasn't been significantly doctored and a forensic anthropologist to testify that the age range is below adulthood.

Interesting stuff, forensic anthropology- was just checking out an exhibit on it at the Mutter Museum a few weeks ago; it's really nothing like what the show "Bones" leads people to believe.

Har har har.  No, I realized that it was different, but not that different- I figured a series based on books by a forensic anthropologist would bear a little more similarity to the field.  As it stands, virtually every definitive answer that comes up in the show is closer to science fiction than the real deal.

Cop shows have to be exciting if they want an audience. Real life forensics isn't very exciting. I'm not sure why you'd expect it to be otherwise.

I found it's useful for non-perverts as well.  I had a difficult time reinstalling EU3 before I used CCleaner.

Internet is unreliable.
There's always the risk of going without for hours...days...weeks....
And websites vanish. Files are removed. With stuff of dubious legality I'd imagine this happens regularly, if at least to try and stay one step ahead of the authorities.
