Beeb: is that usually discrete files, uncleared caches, or can you not say?

Honestly, I'm completely paranoid about what gets left on my computer, so I delete with programs that meet NSA spec (writes over the sector where the deleted data was 7 times).  A good computer forensic tech can even extrapolate data that's been overwritten once or twice.

Discrete files from what I recall.  Not my files though, so my knowledge was just from discussions with colleagues.

Thing is, you guys are all talking about more or less "legitimate" porn, that you can download from a pay site or for free. The OP is talking about pervs being busted, presumably for having illegitimate porn, like kiddie porn. That stuff is no doubt somewhat hard to get, being illegal, so naturally the pervs in question are going to want to save it when they find some.

Nah - even on the kiddie porn files they usually have a ton of "legitimate" porn as well on their hard drives.

Not scare quotes. Used because "legitimate" is a purely invented term in this context.

I'm not sure what you mean.  Do you mean "lawful in itself, but probably procured in violation of copyright law"?

one man's "legitmate" porn is another mans "freaky, yet legal, snm" porn (i'm looking at you CdM :P). That's ahow a read the quote marks.

I've never understood the porn hoarding... other digital files, like TV, comics, movies, music of non porny status sure. I hoard those, but porn?

you look at it then go away. I don't get watching the same porn over and over.

Why would you hoard movies or tv, by the same logic? One rarely goes back to rewatch them and technically they are all available if you want to rewatch them.

I do. I watch movies worth watching more than once, often dozens of times. tv not as much, but it's kind of an addiction. and technically no lots of movies go out of print.. for example some cunt stole our dvd of Barfly... avail in north America legally? nope outta print... goes on ebay for too much money.

"Legitimate" is not a term of art for porn. Porn is not, in fact, divided into legitimate and illigitimate (the established terms would be legal & illegal). Hence use of quotes. Scare quotes are something else again.

How do you distinguish kiddie porn from legitimate porn?  How do you know any given picture or video is someone underage, as opposed to someone who is legal age but just appears young?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

That can in fact be quite a problem.

In order to make out a conviction you have to prove that ther person depicted is, or appears to be, under the age of 18 on a standard of "proof beyond a reasonable doubt".  Lots of charges are withdrawn, or never laid in the first place, because the age of the subject is ambiguous.  Also, there is a large "legitimate" market for 'barely legal' porn.

You are entitled to look at all of the circumstances and evidence.  That incldues the image itself of course, but also the file name, where and how it is stored, and other documentary evidence from the computer.  So, an image itself may be arguable, but if the file name is 13yogirl.jpg stored under the directory /childporn, you can probably get a conviction.

PLus of course lots of child porn leaves you with no doubt that the subject is well under the age of 18. :x

Argue that they are historically valuable.  ;)
