I don't get this concept of downloading porn. Every time they catch some pervert, he always has tens of thousands of indecent images on their computer. Surely you just look at the filth of your choice online as the will takes you?

I assume that pervs are storing and trading pics that are otherwise unobtainable or illegal.

Every pic you look at online is "stored" in your cache though; and even if you delete them they are merely deleted from the catalog (or whatever it's called) and actually remain on the hard drive until overwritten by some other stuff. I'd kind of assumed that a lot of pervs didn't know this

I think there is an element of "hoarding" involved, which is more of a psychological than an actual need. I also think this is a response rooted in the past, when online access to streaming porn was impossible due to slow internet connection.

Plus of course some porn is paid per view, but can be downloaded, so there is a benefit to having it on your harddrive rather than accessing it online.

I have actually freed up about 40 GB of old porn collection on my hard drive recently because I realized that I can access it online at any time.

Some sites have you pay a high subscription fee that gives access to anything on their site, if you want to see any of it after you've canceled after that first month you'll need to have downloaded it.

So when you do that, how come your hard drive capacity increases when you delete the pics, if the stuff is still "stored." I mean I know that's correct, but I never understood it.

I saved the stuff I paid for.  The peace of mind knowing you are not going to get some sort of horrible virus or internet worm was worth the couple bucks.

Because kiddie porn is only found on old usenet forums nowadays.

Well, I assume.

While the pics were undeleted they had reserved disk space, on deletion that space can now be overwitten and is available.

See, I'd tend to agree, although the "any time" may be problematic--and this applies to other content, not just porn.  I mean, my Internet was out for about 30 hours this week.  That's an extreme case, but I wasn't bound to be bored, since I have a great deal of local content, from MST3K episodes to COHF videos.

Thing is, you guys are all talking about more or less "legitimate" porn, that you can download from a pay site or for free. The OP is talking about pervs being busted, presumably for having illegitimate porn, like kiddie porn. That stuff is no doubt somewhat hard to get, being illegal, so naturally the pervs in question are going to want to save it when they find some.

Methinks you know about this too much.... ;)

If I was into that sort of thing I would have it on an external hard drive or USB data stick and bring it out of its hiding place when I wanted to indulge.
