Manga Ph.D

QuoteKyoto Seika University announced  on Tuesday that it will offer Japan's first doctorate program in manga  studies to new students, beginning in April of next year. The university  in Kyoto has a 40-year history of academic study in manga and  animation.

There's never been such a better time for a return to school. :)

Do you oppose PhDs in Literature?

Manga is quite important - and has been so for centuries - in Japanese society, and certainly deserves its own PhD (since the course itself already exists for over 40 years, just not the PhD).

I am actually surprised the Ph.D hadn't been already available in Japan.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

squid rape porn has been a motif in japan for like 300 years (seriously. the bomb didn't mess them up, they were already messed up), should that have a PhD? ;) My main objection is that i doubt serious people interested in the history of manga will gravitate to this degree. it's be the Tim's and Lettow's of society.

It's a multi-billion dollar industry that takes up 50% of the Japanese publishing industry. There are lots of serious business people involved.

No shit.  By that logic universities should offer PhDs in potato chips.
