Something I've wondered but never bothered to try- task manager changing priorities for processes.
Is this 'safe' to do to make say a game run faster? does it even work?
Or would it just mess up core computer running processes and slow down (or crash) the entire computer?

Priority works for non active "windows". You have a browser open and you have Winamp.  The browser takes priority over Winamp.  You want to change that, you can set Winamp to have the priority.  Now, for this, it won't change anything, for CPU intensive apps, I don't really know...  For games, they already have direct access to the hardware and they already have priority since they are fullscreen.

If you want to try something, shut down all non essential process and see if the game runs faster.
