Really sucks how these days we've got a political class who their whole lives work purely towards being politicians. Sadly I can't think of any decent ways to cure that.

Tricky and Shelf: you may be right.  But you're also both operating at a point in which there are no repercussions to hazarding an incorrect guess.
I think the market had accepted Darling's plan of halving the deficit over a parliament and starting in 2011 not 2010 as a baseline.  But it was a worry, you're right.  I thought, and still think, that eliminating the deficing over 5 years was foolhardy and it does seem to have had an impact on growth before the big cuts have even begun.

Quote@Sheilbh - indeed, this bunch seem very amateurish. I wonder if this is a perverse consequence of so many of them being "professional" politicians rather than people who have done serious work in other areas? The problem is that Labour look very similar. Vote for the amateurs who support bloodsucking bankers or vote for the amateurs who support bloodsucking bureaucrats - not much of a choice.
It is frustrating that Labour's not looking that much better.  The weird thing though is that I think Parliament's coming across well.  The non-whipped committees seem to be doing a pretty good job so far and this Parliament's already been the most restive and rebellious both for government and opposition.  Plus I do like the cabinet government that the coalition's required.  It's sad that our system seems to be working more as it theoretically should, but the people in chare just aren't up to it.
