Now that's some good news as the dvd version I have suffers from not having a good quality. Same for my dvds of "Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or". I could do with a good quality version of both. Saw both on French tv back in the early 80s (when I didn't understand french, très drôle) and only the cities of gold made it to flemish tv (in english with subtitles cause we don't do dubbing) years later.

Now that's some good news as the dvd version I have suffers from not having a good quality. Same for my dvds of "Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or". I could do with a good quality version of both. Saw both on French tv back in the early 80s (when I didn't understand french, très drôle) and only the cities of gold made it to flemish tv (in english with subtitles cause we don't do dubbing) years later.

Flemish TV does not dub cartoons? Back then, you mean? Portuguese TV used to do the same, till the late 90's early '00s.

Things changed I guess since I saw Flemish AND Dutch dubs for Harry Potter movies on blu-rays. Movies and cartoons for children, of course.


Just in case, avoid the blu-ray release of the first series of les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or, unless it's the japanese version, since they completely messed up the image with digital noise reduction wantonly applied (no access to Japanese HD soruce), making it even less sharp than the DVD, under the pretense of remastering it.

The French DVD edition I have now a Breton (Brezhoneg) dub. The image from the DVD is nothing special, but at least it's faithful to the Standard Definition quality.
 The so-called HD image from the blu-rays is the worst I have ever seen, blurry and with lots of detail lost.

The subsequent seasons, made 30 years later, are sanitised for today's audiences, hence not worth it.

Oh wow. That's a surprise. They go to the full effort to do a Belgian accented dub when a Hollandish one already exists.
I wonder which people in the southern NL like?

I have noticed this happens with a lot of kids cartoons these days with American and British English though, and I greatly approve.

Flemish Dutch and Netherlands' Dutch sounds different and does have different word-useage.
Distinct enough that its easy to recognize.
That said: before around 1990 (iirc) Flanders didn't have real commercial TV. So many flemish also watched Dutch TV meaning we were better attuned to it, but also that it wasn't really commercially interesting to provide an additional dub.
Once the commercial broadcaster (VTM) took of we developed a media landscape that had sufficient depth and wealth to sustain many more people as well as making flemish Dutch dubs a viable thing.
And Studio 100 taking of big time has only made that more economically worthwhile.

People in the south of the Netherlands sound like Dutch to us, occasionally with an accent thats a bit closer to Flemish-Dutch (like Zeeland). But I'm relatively certain that they'll use the Netherlands-Dutch version.

But let there be no mistake: in Flanders the language is Dutch,  just with regional accents. No different from the fact that the anglosphere has different variants of English.

So it's a 'recent' thing. Also one of the reasons I made sure my kids saw a bunch of stuff with the Dutch dub. So that they're at least somewhat familiar with the differences

Same here. Along with Albator (pirates!) and the Cités d'Or (history!), I think it basically set me on my career path.

But yeah, cités had an outsized influence on deciding to go for archaeology.
