Quote from: Duque de Bragança on March 22, 2022, 10:36:38 AMI saw the new cut at a limited cinema screening in a commercial but somewhat alternative cinema venue in the Champs-Élysées (popcorn available for Sheilbh just in case) so either you have or had limited screenings around you or it's VoD for the time being.

I would not be surprised if it gets a physical release though, only DVD would be disappointing however.
Like I said, I haven't heard of it, and I'm sure I would have picked it up somewhere if it had had a limited release in cinema.

Quote'True Detective' Season 4 in the Works at HBO From Issa López, Barry Jenkins

A fourth season of "True Detective" is officially in development at HBO, Variety has learned from sources.

The new season is currently titled "True Detective: Night Country." The plot is largely being kept under wraps, but sources say that it would take place in the Arctic, where night can last more than 24 hours. It is also believed that the season would feature two female leads. No casting is confirmed at this time.

Issa López is attached to serve as writer and executive producer on the new season in addition to directing the pilot. Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak of Pastel will also executive produce. Pastel is currently under a first-look deal at HBO and HBO Max. Anonymous Content, which has produced past seasons of the show, and several other executive producers from past seasons are expected to board the project as well.

HBO declined to comment.

This is not the first time there has been a multi-year gap between seasons of the critically-acclaimed show. Season 3 of the show, starring Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, aired in 2019. Season 2 aired in 2015, with Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Taylor Kitsch leading the cast. The initial season starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, ran in 2014.

Across its three seasons to date, "True Detective" has been nominated for 23 Emmy Awards with five wins, all of which were for the first season.

López has previously written, produced, and directed films like "Todo Mal," "Tigers Are Not Afraid," and "Three Sundays" among others. It was reported in February that she will write, produce, and direct the feature "The Girl With a Thousand Names" for HBO Max.

She is repped by Rand Holston Management, M88, and Hirsch, Wallerstein.

Jenkins won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay in 2017 alongside Tarell Alvin McCraney for the film "Moonlight," with Jenkins also picking up a nomination for best director. The film ultimately won best picture while Ali won for best supporting actor. Jenkins also got an Oscar nomination for "If Beale Street Could Talk" in the best adapted screenplay category. Most recently, he worked on the critically-acclaimed Amazon series "The Underground Railroad," based on the book of the same name by Colson Whitehead.

Jenkins is repped by CAA, Silent R Management, and Lichter Grossman.

Pizzolato is not involved? It seems weird to put this new show under the True Detective umbrella then, given it's an anthology series with no connective tissue besides the writer.

No way to smacktalk about Katmai like that.

Strongly recommend Boiling Point on Netflix.

It's really good. Follows Stephen Graham as the head chef of a restaurant whose personal life is collapsing on one night/service. It's all single take which is really effective and not just a gimmick.

Although it is possibly the most stressful film I've watched since Uncut Gems - so only watch it if you're in  a calm place to begin with

 Having said that - I'm not sure if it's generally stressful or just incredibly triggering if you've ever worked in a restaurant

I keep bogging down in Better Call Saul and the reason is that whereas the Ermentraut and Fring plot lines are interesting, the main Jimmy McGill line is not.

Yeah, that seems to be the general consensus.

Yeah, that seems to be the general consensus.

As a lawyer, I'm loving the main McGill plot line.

I just watched the finale of season 4. I thought it was great.
Jimmy faced an appeal to get his licence back. The board originally refused him because, although he met all the requirements, they did not feel he was "sincere" - in short, he was too glib.

So he's faced with a dilemma - how can he make a pitch to get his licence back, and demonstrate his "sincerity" and lack of glibness, in an oral pitch before an appeal panel, when discussing his tortured relationship with his brother?

He does this brilliantly, and it is truly a masterpiece of both acting by the actor playing McGill, and of acting in the world of the show - as a piece of oral advocacy. The trick is not to lie, but to use the truth, cast in such a manner that the finder of fact can't help but be carried along with your version of events — in this case, Jimmy used the fact that Jimmy was always thought inferior by Chuck, who was always 'right', to show why the two fell out, and why this should not be held against him resuming his law career. The ability to delve deeply into the truth in such a way as to practically compel belief in the correctness of one's position really is the skill that good oral advocates have, and I've rarely seen it demonstrated better.
Edit: why aren't my spoiler tags working any more?

The Mote in God's Eye could be made with modern CGI.  I always liked the alien-ness of the aliens in that one.

Lord of Light has already been written as a script (see Argo).  It was Zelazny's best work, and his lessor stuff made decent films.
