I really hope that an "Annotated Simpsons" comes out some day. At least for the early seasons.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

I've been watching the Simpsons with the boys before bed.  Season 1 wasn't all that great (although it was a big hit even then), so we wound up skipping to season 3 and it's been fantastic.  But you're reminded how old this show is too sometimes.  Certainly there are endless pop culture references my kids will never get.

The threads by this Twitter account are pretty good for some of that stuff :)

It's weird to think but the simpsons has been going so long that had they aged Bart would be homers age now... Older even.

Yup.  In the episode I Married Marge it shows Marge getting pregnant with Bart in 1980, which would make him 42 by now.  (I just watched this one a few days ago)

As for Homer, in The Way We Was it shows Homer and Marge in high school in 1974.  Since they go to the prom they must have graduated then making him 18 at the time.  That makes Homer born in 1956, so... 35 at the start of The Simpsons?  And 65 now?

But I understand in a recent episode they showed a teenage Homer... set in the 1990s

Don't ask me - I haven't seen a new episode of the Simpsons in probably 15 years.

It would make sense to move skinner to the gulf war.
And grandpa to Vietnam.
The trouble is the gap in between where there was no good war to move skinner to.

Ah - so after Gillian Anderson as Thatcher, it's the turn of straight women and the gays to conflictedly fancy a Tory Prime Minister :(

Jonny Lee Miller will play John Major in the fifth season of The Crown.

On the other hand - quite intrigued to see who they eventually lined up for Blair. Michael Sheen has been the go to for the last 20 years, but I feel like he's probably a bit too old now.

Finishing season 4 of DS9, and a lot of it feels like a dress rehearsal for BSG.

Out of Africa. Scandiweenians decide to move to pre-WW1 Africa, with hilarious results. IIRC I haven't seen it before, even if it was a big deal when it came out. A big movie in a very old-fashioned style.

A certain character doesn't get any screentime. Mew.

Watching The Simpsons, and got to Homer at the Bat.  What a great episode.

An awkward story about Darryl Strawberry, who featured prominently in the episode.  A few years after the episode came out, Strawberry had flunked out of the major leagues.  He had, err, an addiction problem.

Mid-90s he wound up signing with the St Paul Saints of the independent Northern League.  Same league as the Winnipeg Goldeyes.  Mid 90s my dad was the sports editor of the Winnipeg Sun newspaper.  Anyways he was friends with a fellow I'll call Mr G, a sportswriter for the Sun who covered the Goldeyes.  Mr G had a drinking problem (which is part of why he was buddies with my dad  :Embarrass:).

Anyways, Mr G goes to interview Darryl Strawberry after a Northern League game.  Strawberry tells him to fuck off because Mr G is drunk at the time.  A writer from Sports Illustrated sees the interactions and writes about it (without naming Mr G, but everyone in Winnipeg knew who it was).

Anyways, Mr G had to go to rehab (it didn't take).  Darryl Strawberry used his stint in the Northern League to go back to the majors for a bit, although that didn't take either.

And that's my six degrees of separation story with Homer at the Bat.
