I am now a Formula 1 fan because of the Netflix series. Going to some friends house on the 18th to watch the race in Italy.

How come? What is it that you find exciting about it?

Auto racing has always been something that is quite interesting to read or learn about - but that watching an actual race is like watching paint dry.  In my opinion of course.
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

Documentaries/dramatizations can make any sport you'd normally not be interested look interesting, because they focus on telling a story and generally leave out the tedium.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

I gave the F1 series about 10 minutes.  Never ending 3 second shots of drivers smiling and joking.

Rush is a good movie if you're looking for racing entertainment.

I've rewatched the "breakdown in the country" scene over and over and still get a kick out of it.  The Italian guys are perfect.

My go to racing movie is Cannonball Run -_-

I think the F1 series was one of the best things I've watched in a while.

"Drivers smiling and joking" yeah, I can see how if you hate humans and social interaction that could be uninteresting. :P

I loved all the interplay and rivalries between drivers, teams, within teams, etc., etc.

And yes, of course it could very well be the case that watching a show about F1 might be a LOT more interesting then F1 in general, since they get to just focus on the interesting bits and ignoring the rest.

But I've *never* been remotely interested in any kind of auto racing, but that series has resulted in me spending probably another 50 hours just looking up shit about F1 and following my interest in a lot of the details the show left out.

Rush is really a much better movie than it deserved to be. It's also a period piece for a more "romantic" time in Formula 1, when drivers were huge celebrities that really put their lives in the line in each race. Nowadays it's a much more "technocratic" period in the sport (if it can be called a sport, it feels wrong to me to do so, as the engineers working behind closed doors seem to be so much more important than the drivers).

IMO, the people who really love F1 racing nowadays tend to be tech and mechanic nerds. The more "dramatic" elements in play are not really at the forefront nowadays.

I mean, I like the Rocky movies, but I still have no interest in watching boxing matches. :)

I'm trying to think ... I feel there was a documentary that really got me interested in a subject I previously had zero interest in, but I forget what it was ...  :hmm:

What caught your attention about the interpersonal dinamics amongst the pilots and teams? I'm not super familiar with the current rosters and personalities involved, but my impression is that today's drivers are much blander than the ones in the past.

I love it when you get interested in something because you saw a movie/similar. :)

I haven't paid much attention to F1 since the early 90s. In the 90s I got a bit interested in North American racing thanks to the PC game Indycar. The last few years I've been occasionally watching 24h races like Daytona and Le Mans (not live or in one sitting), I find them kinda fascinating. Nice background stuff when you paint minis.
Women want me. Men want to be with me.

Grey Fox

I'd like to welcome Berkut to F1 fandom. Try to avoid falling into sim racing. Shit is expensive.

And if you enjoy that you might like cycling too :)

I haven't watched it but know several non-F1 fans who loved it. I will watch it. I'm not a big fan of F1 but my mum is a huge fan so I've watched more than I'd like

Yeah, but in cycling you win if your team has the best doctors, rather than the best engineers like in F1.  :P
