I didn't really like Scott Pilgrim. It didn't stop me from enjoying his movie.

I always kind of assumed I wasn't really supposed to like him all that much. You don't cast Michael Cera in a role if you want the character to be liked, right?

I mean, he is Canadian, right?

Cel is right.  The movie's a little hollow.  I liked a bit.

I'm surprised CDM is so enamored with it, given that it's about Millennials with Asperger's or whatever it was his Gen X majesty is constantly raving about.

Cera needs a good punch to the face.

I always assumed the hero of the film was his gay room-mate. It certainly made it more enjoyable.

I appreciate pop culture references when used properly and cleverly, even the 16 bit gaming generation.

Yeah, that's why I will probably check the graphic novel out, it probably works better in that context.

EDIT: Also, I would NEVER dump a girlfriend called "Knives". It's too awesome a name.

Knives was 100% superior to Ramona.

I had a poll on the Women of Scott Pilgrim's World, but I can't remember who took the leaderboard.

Stuff from the past week or so, for the folks who are interested (of which there are a few, a fact I only point out to forestall CountDeKilljoy bitching about nothing):

Whiplash (2014).  Another film that will make any right-minded human being happy that Damien Chazelle makes movies instead of hitting a hollow cylinder with a stick.  A+

Automata, The One I Love, and Predestination (all 2014).  One of these movies has Ethan Hawke in it!  Guess which one!  C+, C+, B+, respectively.

Big Hero 6 (2014).   In 2013, Frozen doubled-down on the return to tradition represented by Tangled: big musical numbers, romantic subplot, and a "girl-centric" narrative, whatever that means.  Last year came Big Hero 6, which is a violent, funny revenge film.  Okay... those are cool, too.  B+

Putting the list in miserablist! (or, the films of David Fincher ranked, nos. 10-9)  UGH to no. 10.

I'd probably go with Knives overall. Pure hotness though would go to Scott's sister, Anna Kendrick.

That's no joke.  That's one of my huge problems with the flick.  Arguably, Knives isn't quite as hot as Mary Elizabeth Winstead, but we're talking about tenths of a percentage point here.  But Ramona's emptiness is simply so much less appealing.

Admiral Yi

Just watched Dallas Buyer's Club.  Starts strong, kind of tails off.

Didn't understand how he got to keep on flying in and out hauling drugs when they knew what he was doing.

I saw Fury on pay per view over the weekend.  It was a lot better than I thought it would be but I had some trouble understanding some of the banter between the tank crew members  - the accents seemed to be put on a bit thick.  Some good action scenes
although it was difficult to understand how a group of boys could take out a tank with one shot with their Panzerfaust earlier in the movie but a large number of SS troops couldn't do the same to a disabled surrounded tank
.
Also, the explanation for the motivation of making a suicidal stand in a war that was coming to an end was missing.  Especially since the Pitt character made a big deal about making sure his crew made it through earlier in the movie.
Also, the disorientating instant progression from combat in broad daylight to pitch black... I felt like I was watching an imitation of Apocalypse Now.

The answer to CC's question is "David Ayer wanted it that way, for reasons."
