I had a captain throw a coffee cup at me on the bridge, once, for asking who had the conn (turns out that he did, but didn't realize it until I asked).

Was no big deal, because he apologized for it later, in front of everyone who had been present at the time.  Just one of those things that can happen in a high-stress environment.  Had he not apologized, though, it would have been held against him by everyone there.

IMO, sure, she got preferentially promoted because she was the best thing they had to show in her field (female surface warfare officer).  Not because of some conspiracy, but just because people see the lack of people proportionately represented in a position as a bad thing, to be corrected as soon as possible.

However, the warning signs were there, and no man would have been promoted the same way under those circumstances.  Competition for command at sea is fucking brutal, and the only bad CO I had was a token (a surface nuke who hadn't gotten out for a high-paying civilian job).

But I agree - German aristocrats have no business commanding ships in the US Navy.
