ELLSINORE, Mo., April 7 (UPI) -- A man suspected of stealing an airplane from a flight school in Canada has been arrested in Missouri after landing the plane on a highway, authorities said.

The pilot -- identified as Yavuz Burke -- is accused of taking off Monday from Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and leading fighter jets on a chase across the U.S. Midwest, ABC News reported.

The FBI said Burke took off on foot about 9:50 p.m. EDT Monday after landing a Cessna 172 on U.S. Highway 60 in Ellsinore, Mo. but was taken into custody a short time later by Missouri State Highway Patrol officers.

Burke was formerly known as Adam Leon, FBI spokesman Rich Kolko said. He is a 31-year-old naturalized Canadian citizen who was born in Turkey.

Two F-16 fighters began to escort the Cessna after it crossed into U.S. airspace from Canada at 4:23 EDT over Michigan's Upper Peninsula, ABC said. As the pilot flew over Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Missouri, he ignored repeated requests that he contact air controllers on the ground.

ABC said Canadian officials told U.S. officials Burke had been treated Friday for depression, and that he left a good-bye note for his girlfriend.
