Iran has warned it will reassess its relations with Britain in a number of key areas, saying future ties would be determined based on Iranian national interests.

Manouchehr Mottaki, the Iranian foreign minister, told the 19th International Conference on the Persian Gulf on Monday that a range of ties, including economic, legal and scientific, had been under a "magnifying glass" over the past six months.

"All these fields of relations [with Britain] are under study and each case will be reviewed upon the country's national interests and at the end the government will make the final decision", he told the conference delegates in Tehran.

Tehran accuses the UK and other Western nations of fomenting the post-election turmoil in Iran following presidential elections in June and of attempting to destabilise its nuclear programme.

Iran has indicated repeatedly that it plans to re-examine relations with London.

German warning

Meanwhile in Berlin, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said on Monday that Germany would be preparing possible further sanctions against Iran in the weeks ahead if there was no change in its disputed nuclear energy programme.

In a joint news conference in the German capital with Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, Merkel said: "Germany has made clear that if Iran's reaction does not change, we will be working on a comprehensive package of sanctions.

"Of course we would prefer it if these [sanctions] could be agreed within the framework of the United Nations Security Council."

Netanyahu said the time had already come to apply "crippling sanctions" against Iran over its nuclear programme, which is says the country is developing for hostile purposes.

"If we don't apply sanctions, crippling sanctions against this Iranian tyranny, when shall we apply them? If not now, when? The answer is now," he said.

Tehran says its nuclear work is aimed only at generating electricity for civilian purposes.

Israel, assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear power, sees Iran's project as a threat to its existence, citing hostile rhetoric against the Israel by Iranian leaders.

Earlier, Netanyahu and members of his government took part in a special joint session with the German government in Berlin, a symbolic visit highlighting the two nations' bond six decades after the Holocaust.

The historic trip was originally scheduled for late November, but was put off at the last moment when Netanyahu fell ill.

What ties do they have to Britain that can be downgraded?

Are they going to quit kidnapping British citizens?  Or maybe they could do a capture and release program like we do with fish.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

What exactly were they based on before?  Syrian national interests?

I say we start calling the Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf.
Just to annoy them. They already get prissy enough when you just call it the Gulf.
