Personally I don't think we should make any big effort to secure the release of these people.  Ussually I like the idea of getting our people out of a situation like this but there is a certain threshold of stupidity when crossed people simply deserve what they get.  Deciding to go on vacation in Iraq and wander about the Iraqi-Iranian border is crossing that line.  It's like visiting the refugee camps in Darfur to try out the local food.  Maybe if the chick was hotter or they were really were spies or they were doing something I'd be more forgiving.  As Grumbler would say, "Fortunately you aren't in a position to make that choice", so maybe it's for the best.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011
