I mean maybe fascism had something to do with European forces like Hegelianism and Nationalism and right wing Paternalism and so forth and had no meaningful connections to American political forces.  I mean we never had any significant fascists over here, not even from the supposed progressivism roots of fascism (which I guess I should point out were a part of the Republican Party....).

I agree.  Fascism was a rejection of tired old liberal democracies, led by tired old men.  Whether those men were socialists like Blum, or conservatives like Chamberlain, or liberals like Giolitti was irrelevant to Fascism.  Similarly whether it was Teddy Roosevelt or Woodrow Wilson wouldn't matter to a Fascist.
