AMPAS has created quite a monster with it's 10  slots for Best Picture consideration.  Take a look with me at some of the hopefuls for 2009:

Shutter Island/Scorsese

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdumGs1qoXM

Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, Max Von Sydow, Michelle Phillips

I hate Lehane crap, but this is Marty.

Agora/Amenabar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u50zEun07b4

Rachel Weisz (not a fan)

Alexandria.

Precious/Daniels

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx-3jYJkUWQ

Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey

Big early word on this one from the film festivals, consider it a serious contender for a nomination, and get ready for Oscar nominee Mo'Nique (as the abusive Mother.)

The Road/Hillcoat

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbLgszfXTAY

Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall

Author Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic road show would not normally be Oscar bait, but Esquire magazine has given it a huge rave.  10 slots.

Nine/Marshall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_5_lzags3I

Legend Daniel Day Lewis, Legend Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judy Dench, Goldie Hawn's daughter, Fergie , and Miss Sophia Loren.

I hate musicals, but Legend Day Lewis and Legend Kidman will get me front seat, opening night for this one.

Invictus /Eastwood

Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon

Eastwood looks at Mandela.

The Lovely Bones/Jackson

Mark Walhberg, Rachel Weisz, Briony, Susan Sarandon, and Stanley Tucci

Peter Jackson adapts some beloved novel.

And I made nice You tube links to the trailers for you all.

Oh, you tubes don't need [img]!

I hadn't seen a few of those trailers yet. I like the looks of Shutter Island and Lovely Bones. (It was a very good novel actually.)

Holy Crap that looks AWESOME!
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

Having read the book, so far the trailers have made it look pretty damned awful.

I agree, but supposedly the trailers are not representative of the actual movie.  The article I read claimed that none of the apocalypse scenes in the trailer are in the movie

I have extremely high hopes for it, which means it will probably crash and burn. -_-

I'm still waiting for someone to make A Canticle for Leibowitz into a movie. :(
