I'm friends with people who are really into teaching languages and the attitude of your friends is quite a running joke in their circles.  Our school (like many others) uses RS to teach languages for whom we cannot find a teacher.  The program works on several levels and uses a variety of teaching/learning styles, so almost every kid will get taught at least a bit in the style he/she is most able to use.  Students still need a native speaker to practice with (our students have assigned tutors who speak with them over the phone) but the results are good:  we have had students go from three years of RS German to an intermediate-level college course in their senior year of HS and do very well.
