So let me continue my political ramblings about this country of mine I so love to hate.

The Prime Minister has resigned today.

Well, to be exact, he said that he would call a vote of no confidence against himself in two weeks, naming his successor (required by a no confidence motion) to be the guy the other parties agree on.

I can tell you right now, that unless all the other parties make some major gesture toward the biggest opposition party (FIDESZ) by agreeing to one of their economists to be PM, this will not happen. The PM will resign anyway, however, as common people already consider this a done business and there would be huge uprisings if he would go all "lol i was kidding lol" on them.

And, I am not sure the opposition wants power that much right now. The country is on the very verge of budgetial collapse, or will be around the end of this year, and unless some MAJOR cost-cutting is done, we will either face bankrupcy, or at the very least, be very severly hit by this economic crisis.

The PM, Gyurcsány, will remain head of the socialist party regardless of his imminent resignation as PM, so I think the play here is dead obvious: if the parties do agree to put an neutral economist at the helm to act as mini-pinochet, and he succeeds, Gyurcsány and his party can claim partial credit for it. If the economist guy is swept away by angry mobs, they can point fingers on the other parties.
And if, (and this is the more likely scenario) his resignation results in preliminary elections, Gyurcsány and his party can hope in remaining a moderate force in parlaiment, if for nothing else then because of the impending fear of FIDESZ getting a 2/3rd majority (FIDESZ is regularly courting the more far-right elements of the society, scaring a lot of moderates off. I dont get why they are doing this, btw). And with now FIDESZ being government, Gyurcsány and his party can yell at them from the sidelines for "ruining the country" regardless of what happens in practice (if FIDESZ does fix the budget, the people will be in uproar. if they don't the country collapses).

So if you ask me, I think the thinktanks at FIDESZ are now very busy trying to find a way of actually keeping themselves in opposition, and avoiding a preliminary election, while of course, heavily pushing for that election in public.
