Most people down here say 'coke' and I occasionally hear 'pop'.  For some reason my mother in law says 'soft drinks', which sounds really stupid to me.  I mean, yes, sodas are a type of soft drink, but it sounds weird to use that term in everyday conversation.

Philly: 'soda' is universal.

Boston: 'soda' has mostly replaced 'tonic'.

The northeast goes down as far as the Virginia suburbs of DC IMO.  The only parts of Maryland that might be considered 'the south' are the Eastern Shore and the area west of Hagerstown.

Judging by the story, the guys just stood at the backyard's door and opened up on the people that were there, and then ran and broke contact. If they had manouvered by closing in with their targets, there would have been 12 dead bodies in that backyard.

Its all about tactics.

Yes.  My mother's father's family hailed from Maryland originally, and despite having left in the late 19th century my great grandparents was still VERY Southern in culture, attitude, etc.  My great grandmother's only real Yankee trait was her Philadelphia accent.
