I never had one, but I was fortunate enough to be grandfathered in in DC for beer and wine when I was in college.

Judging by University of Iowa I'd say 100% of college kids now have one.

I made a 100% spurious Danish drivers license with a colour printer and some semi-official looking Danish stickers and managed to convince one bouncer at a club in Ottawa that it was legit (really emphasized my Danish accent also). Only used it the once, though, to see a show. Drinking age in Ottawa was 19 and across the river in Hull (now Gatineau) it was 18... and plenty of places there never checked ID, so I started semi-regular clubbing at age 17.

Yes, in high school.  16-17 years old.  It was needed in some clubs.  The local bar mostly never bothered me, especially during the day.  Even when the physics teacher came by, they didn't bother .   Started going to bars at 15, no problem.  My dad brought me to a strippers club when I was about 15 yo with the other construction guys.  Mom wasn't too happy to learn about it later.  But we were often going to regular bars after work when working on sites, never needed an id in these places.

Ids, I had two, a school one with a picture, the other one without a picture (back then, driver's license and government health care card did not have pictures).  So, I was given an expired driver's licence from a friend who was about the same height, same eye and hair color as me + a fake school id card with my picture on it to replace his.

Worked like a charm.  Until I met a very suspicious bouncer.  He asked for my first id.  Gave the drivers license.  He looked closely at it. He asked for one with a picture.  So I gave my school card very naturally.  He looked at it intensely, never looking at me.  He asked for a 3rd id.  So I took my wallet very naturally, and faked looking through it.  And then he said "Don't bother, I know the guy, you're not him.  You can go home now".

Fuck.  I was barred from that place until my 18th birthday.  Barely 16 and couldn't go to the best place in town.

Some other place though, the bouncer wasn't too bright.  So I gave my real id and he just asked:
-"... are you 18?
-.  Yeah sure, year xx, it makes 18
-Ok, get in"

This might be a fun story for some people.  Reform Party, assembly 1992 - the party's bi-annual convention.  It was held in Winnipeg.  I was the Youth co-ordinator (I got to meet Preston Manning!).

Anyways - I wound up going out to the bar with a group of right wing youths.  This group included semi-notorious Ezra Levant.  Problem was though I was only 17.  I wound up borrowing some guy's student ID from Laurentian University.  He looked enough like me - at a distance and if you squinted.  But anyways it worked - we got in to the bar.

I had a chalked id initially when I went to college, then upgraded to my friend's id when he turned 21 (on September 11, 2001. Not a great 21st for him.) I also nabbed his old college id, a Wegman's card (grocery store), and an old credit card he had cancelled. The only time it failed me was once when the door guy said the id was me but the college id wasn't.

Was often tempted just for the cool factor but never actually needed one.
I basically reached my full height by 15 and my parents were always relaxed about letting me have beers-which likely was a key part in me not seeing the appeal of drinking cider at a bus stop.

I do remember my college (ie 16-18) had big official parties in proper albeit not particularly great and out of the way night clubs. I wonder if they still get away with that.

Never needed one as nobody ever asked for ID in the UK in the 1970s. I was my full height at 15 so started going to pubs then or slightly later. I don't think this was a bad thing; you had to behave yourself and not annoy the older drinkers otherwise the landlord would suddenly decide you were underage and throw you out.

I was really short, but never once got carded once I grew facial hair.

Back in the day, a dad could buy a beer or glass of wine in a café or bar, tell his 12- year old son something along the lines "well I'm not that thirsty, you can finish it if you will" and nobody would bat an eye, not even the café or bar owner.

That is still a crime, using someone else ID to get a prohibited substance.

It's a huge crime in English Canada.

You should self-report yourself, just to be on the safe side.

We had the opposite strategy before we were of age. We sent in the most young-looking of us, who'd buy booze saying it was for his dad. Worked every time.

No idea if this stuff is enforced more strictly nowadays.
