That's pretty interesting.

So FB's line is "as long as the AI images are being seen and liked by real people it's working as intended."

That's a non-trivial IF.

Certainly, it would seem there are some pretty strong incentives for generators of content to also develop LIKE and engagement accounts as they directly impact revenue.

This explains so much.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Yeah - and in fairness it could well be that they are being seen and liked by real people. Lots of the AI pages spend lots of time liking each other. But it may well be people trying to earn money online in the developing world (but, from what I understand) interactions from accounts with European or North American IP addresses are more valuable. (Edit: This is, just as an aside, fucked up.)

But also what you say is true and it's true of the entire internet these platforms have built. The way they make money is online advertising and at every single level it is riddled with fraud. There is zero trust - and at least in the UK the brand safety and anti-fraud providers have even been sued themselves for not just doing what they claim but also misusing their access to sites to build their own audiences.

QuoteBillionaire Larry Ellison says a vast AI-fueled surveillance system can ensure 'citizens will be on their best behavior'

Walking down a suburban neighborhood street already feels like a Ring doorbell panopticon.

But this is only the start of our surveillance dystopia, according to Larry Ellison, the billionaire cofounder of Oracle. He said AI will usher in a new era of surveillance that he gleefully said will ensure "citizens will be on their best behavior."

Ellison made the comments as he spoke to investors earlier this week during an Oracle financial analysts meeting, where he shared his thoughts on the future of AI-powered surveillance tools.

Ellison said AI would be used in the future to constantly watch and analyze vast surveillance systems, like security cameras, police body cameras, doorbell cameras, and vehicle dashboard cameras.

"We're going to have supervision," Ellison said. "Every police officer is going to be supervised at all times, and if there's a problem, AI will report that problem and report it to the appropriate person. Citizens will be on their best behavior because we are constantly recording and reporting everything that's going on."

Ellison also expects AI drones to replace police cars in high-speed chases. "You just have a drone follow the car," Ellison said. "It's very simple in the age of autonomous drones." He did not say if those drones would broadcast the chases on network news.

Ellison's company, Oracle, like almost every company these days, is aggressively pursuing opportunities in the AI industry. It already has several projects in the works, including one in partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Ellison is the world's sixth-richest man with a net worth of $157 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Ellison's children have made names for themselves in the film industry. His daughter Megan Ellison founded her production company Annapurna Pictures in 2011, and his son David Ellison is set to become CEO of Paramount after it completes its merger with Skydance Media.

Though I guess you could argue prolific carrying of cameras/recording equipment at all times and social media shitstorms are already a step in that direction? :P

Larry Ellison? Not Harlan Ellison?

It would be impressive if this was a recent quote from Harlan Ellison since he's been dead for a while.

Larry Ellison, age 80, at a conference this year:

I meant it sounds quite like something Harlan would have written about in a dark Sci fi novella.

I thought it was well known that Larry Ellison had strayed into mild-Howard Hughes-dom some time ago?

No idea Blair already believes this (it's his style) but big focuses for Blair in his policy advocacy and consultancy work with governments is AI and also digitalisation of health data. Both of which are areas Ellison's been very involved in.

I've been watching a few of these AI generated Panavision send ups of movies and realized that the obvious industry for AI to generate revenue is porn.  Just as porn has been the driver of so much of our technology adoption.

Deep fake porn is kind of old news.

My attempts to use create deep fake porn have been abysmal.  Grumbler with big tits is one of the least erotic things you could every imagine.

Iirc the panavision creator gave some insights on how much he makes with this hobby, witch actual numbers an graphs.

About the so-called "1950s Super Panavision 70" videos I'm midly annoyed that 1) None I have seen uses the correct aspect ratio 2) Super Panavision 70 came out in 1959, so the 1950s part is a bit of a stretch  :P
