Le président de la République n'a pas exclu de prôner des interdictions si nécessaire, à l'issue de cette mission qui va durer « deux mois ».

Emmanuel Macron a annoncé, jeudi 5 février, qu'il avait demandé à des experts d'étudier les dangers des jeux vidéo et des « agents d'intelligence artificielle » pour la santé mentale des plus jeunes, et n'a pas exclu de prôner des interdictions si nécessaire.
« On va confier à des experts, et au Conseil national du numérique et de l'IA aussi, un travail » pour « essayer de mesurer scientifiquement l'effet » des jeux vidéo « sur les enfants et les ados », a dit le chef de l'Etat dans un long entretien diffusé par le média Brut.
Cette mission va durer « deux mois », et on pourra donc savoir « en mai-juin » s'il y a un « consensus scientifique » pour dire que l'effet sur les jeunes de certains jeux vidéo « est très mauvais ». Et si c'est le cas, « peut-être qu'il faudra interdire, il ne faut rien exclure » pour « protéger nos enfants et nos ados », a prévenu le président de la République, qui répondait notamment à des questions d'internautes.

« Ce n'est pas du tout régulé »
Selon lui, « quand vous passez cinq ou six heures par jour à tuer des gens » dans des jeux, « à être dans cette logique-là de prédation, c'est clair qu'à un moment donné, ça conditionne des jeunes » et ça peut « les désinhiber complètement et parfois leur faire commettre le pire ».

Parallèlement, il a dit avoir confié aux professeurs en psychiatrie Raphaël Gaillard et Amine Benyamina – ce dernier étant spécialiste des addictions – une autre mission pour « regarder exactement comment fonctionnent » les « agents IA » ou « chat box », et s'ils « font naître des troubles, des dépendances, de la souffrance en termes de santé mentale chez les jeunes et les adolescents ». Là aussi, en vue d'éventuellement proposer des « règles » pouvant aller jusqu'à des interdictions.
Emmanuel Macron a souligné que ces agents IA sur les tchats « miment » le « comportement humain » et « l'empathie », « vous parlent comme à un ami », ce qui « peut conduire à des dérives » et renforcer « l'isolement » de certains jeunes. « On [l']a déjà vu dans des cas particuliers extrêmement graves », a-t-il affirmé, soulignant qu'« aujourd'hui, ce n'est pas du tout régulé ».
Le chef de l'Etat a aussi dit vouloir « imposer le marquage IA » : quand un contenu est réalisé avec l'intelligence artificielle, « il faut qu'il y ait écrit en bas "fait avec l'IA" ». « On a des textes européens qui nous permettent de le faire. C'est une demande forte que j'ai à l'égard de la Commission. Je ne vais pas la lâcher », a-t-il insisté.

Macron has a history of blaming video games; a previous attempt was the one using video games as a cause for suburban (banlieue) rioting.

Also, something about IA chatbots and enforcing IA-made tags for IA slop material, but that's less controversial I believe.

Fun fact: he owns a summer home in my parents' village. He's the epitome of the gauche caviar, with all the associated moral corruption (and I guess actual corruption) that entails. This was long overdue.

It is interesting a little bit of overlap with the Mandelson affair as he was also very much a champagne socialist ("intensely relaxed about the filthy rich - as long as they pay their taxes"). He was less successful than Lang but even had a stint as culture adjacent minister when he was basically the minister in charge of millenium celebrations/projects.

Again no sexual allegations around Mandelson, but Lord Glassman was on the media this weekend. He's the guru of "Blue Labour" which overlaps a lot with the Old Labour Right and he was mde some extraordinary remarks on that possible similar point of moral corruption. He said Labour needed to "repent", it needed to reject New Labour as "an alien body that took over the party and this is where it leads: perversion and paedophilia".

On the Lib Dems with Mandelson - part of what I find incredible is the psychology (and as I say this is probably why he is a key figure for 40 years despite numerous scandals). Apparently he was aware that the FT already had the emails about Epstein paying Mandelson's then partner, now husband at the end of last year. And he went on the offensive - he did a big interview on the BBC, was doing profiles with papers. He was trying to stat his rehabilitation at exactly the point when he knew the volcano was about to explode.

And I'm reminded of Jeremy Thorpe. Thorpe was the very charismatic, dynamic leader of the Liberals in the 70s - he used campaign on a hovercraft that sort of thing. He was also gay and had had an affair with a man called Norman Scott who was now vaguely, slightly trying to blackmail Thorpe. Thorpe had basically been using party funds and one of is allies to help just deal with Scott but it's becoming more challenging. So Thorpe arranged a plot to try and murder Norman Scott (it ultimately failed and the only casualty was Scott's Great Dane, Rinka who was shot). Literally any element of this would end Thorpe's career - and yet at exactly the time when he's being blackmailed and tying to arrange the murder of his ex-lover, Thorpe is at the peak of his powers. Politically the Liberals matter more than they would again until 2010 - but also there are election campaigns that year the Tories and Labour both look tired and Thorpe is the exciting, thrilling thing on the campaign.

There's something in that psychology knowing everything is about to or could explode at any minute - and throwing yourself into publicity that I find personally incomprehensible and very weird. But I think it's a seam in a fair few politicians.
