Well don't worry, it won't be long till they can all move on from racism.
I've no doubt that's what the right-wing press and many in government would like to imagine. But I think they are, yet again, understimating this "suspiciously" eloquent group of young generally working class men - both black players and their team-mates. I think that's going to be a mistake.

I guess the unsung hero here is whoever led the push for academies to offer decent schooling alongside football.
I used to know a guy who as a teen had been part of man utds youth setup. He had thought he had made it and football was all he needed.
He was one of the bulk of kids who never get anywhere and are cut ar the end of the year. his life ended up a bit shit. Stuck in his home village with no qualifications and no prospects in life.
There's been a big push since the late noughties though to really account for the huge churn and make sure these kids even if they don't make it in football will still get a better education than they would have in the outside.
Really does seem to be sticking even with those who did make it.

I think that helps with the expression - but also this is the positive side of social media.

I did see a tweet by Barney Ronay saying that he wondered how old England players felt about this "most likeable" squad stuff. Lineker said that basically a lot of what they're doing and saying is stuff that was always the case - football's always been played by mainly working class kids who cared it's just they had to mediate everything through the media (our media) when the print media was dominant.

And it made me think of a thing I saw Ian Wright saying that the England camp had 2 barbers and if he'd had a haircut when he was an England player he'd be terrified that the headline the next day would be about how he's not focused on the game/why are the players worrying about their hair and not England etc. The media were an enemy - always looking to knock someone down, for a scapegoat and to pile on the pressure.
Let's bomb Russia!

We now got an email at my work decrying this online abuse and recommitting to how are workplace is one with zero tolerance for bullying/harassment.

 What does your workplace has to do with football?

Right? It was all very cringe and like wtf, do I have to be reminded of my race everywhere?

Addressed to you personally? Or just a blanket email?

On odd email stuff, the bank my company uses now shows preferred pronouns as a automatic footer on the email. Not context just her/she/they at the bottom before the signature.

Chat to senior staff and blanket email.

Oh and we also have preferred pronouns in our signatures.

It's like... if genders and thus pronouns are just social constructs and are equal, why is it such a big deal to avoid getting them wrong the first time? Lots of people are happy to guess my nationality and not one of them have got it right the first time, but neither them nor I mind the attempt.

I guess it's something it would have been useful to have even if there was no such thing as transgender and binary folks.
Many a time I've ran into a male Lindsey or been completely confused whether a Jo was a man or a woman or the like.
I guess those people get sick of hearing the same mistakes constantly.

I've been misgendered because of my first name plenty of times and it's quite annoying.

While I sympathize with you and and while the annoyance of being misgendered is real and legitimate, I find the image of someone meeting you for the first time expecting a a dainty book-keeping lady and instead meeting a big bald metalhead pretty delicious.
