I did not think an MMO would look appealing again, but the one being produced by Amazon looks promising - and presumably it has the financial resources to make it work.

The think I like about it is it seems to have taken all of the best ideas from Warhammer Online regarding world PvE and introduced some interesting ideas around PvE.  The thing that is really appealing is there are no character classes, everything is based on stat distribution and skills based on the weapons/items you are using (and right now you can switch among three).  You can also respec your stats and skills up to a certain point for free and thereafter with some form of in game currency.  Also very appealing is there is no limit on the number of crafting/gathering skills on character can learn - so no need to have alts - no need to put in extra time levelling up an alt if you can spend that time levelling a different crafting skill.

It was going to come out in May but the closed beta was pushed pack to July with a release in August.

If anyone else thinks they might want to play, we could all jump on the same server.  It sounds like each server is going to have 1-3 thousand players but the news about that is a bit contradictory.  Also there are going to be three factions which will battle against one another for territory.  The cool thing is that PvE, crafting and PvP all determine how strong defences are, when a territory becomes vulnerable to attack and who can attack what territory.  Last but not least, PvP battles for a territory are scheduled so no waiting for the defenders go to bed, and you can have a satisfying gaming experience by knowing when you can log on to participate.

Release delayed again until next Spring

crazy canuck

This is now in a closed Beta, I think for those who pre-order the more expensive version of the game.

Planned release date is August 31.

I not sure I will play it.  But I note it here because Berkut expressed interest and others may be as well.

I've watched a couple live streams of the Closed Beta. It seems to be a mash up of WoW and Black Desert Online in terms of gameplay. Includes lots of crafting.

Graphics are really nice. I like the realistic icons for items and weapons, especially after 17 years of World of Warcraft cartoonishness.

I played around with it for a few hours - now level 15.  I think it is well made.  There are a lot of things to do even at low levels.  It does not feel like a grind.  The crafting system is great - you get a feeling you are accomplishing something and there is no need to level an alt to help with the crafting.  Each character can do all crafting - but being really good at everything would take a long time.  Lots of QOL design went into this.  Simple things, like if you want to refine 100 of something, you can do it as quickly as 1 of something.  The game does not make you wait while your character grinds one after the other.  The map gives a lot of information and there is a heads up display of the compass direction you are heading in which also shows the direction of the various objectives you have.   You also don't have to carry equipment drops around with you or wait to repair when you get back to town.  You can salvage items wherever you you are - that is the equivalent of vendoring an item - and repair - assuming you have what is needed to carry out the repair.

Playing solo has not been a problem.  If you got serious about the game you would probably want to join a company (guild).  Mobs don't get tagged so however helps with the kill gets some credit.  There are no classes in the game, all skills work off of the weapons you equip and each of those has separate skill development.  You are not restricted to any particular weapons, but of course you need to level up the skills in any weapons you choose to use.

The game is heavily influenced toward PvP.  I have not tried that yet but there is plenty to do if you only want to PvE and the things you do still count toward establishing the base you are working out of.  A neat thing is that the more you improve the base through your various actions the more influence you get there and influence can be used by purchase buffs for when you are in that zone - faster xp, faster gathering, lower crafting fees, etc.

The only down side is I am still trying to get used to the targeting system and sometimes I get a little nauseous with all the consequent camera movement.  So that might be the thing that makes me put the game away if I can solve that part.

But absent that it is a solid game well worth checking out.

This is now an MMO with historic significance. My character has reached level 36. I never went past 32 in any previous ones.  :D

I need to start practicing PVP. My rapier-musket build is admittedly one of the more challenging ones for 1vs1 but it's little excuse for how terribly my two attempts so far went.

How the economy will turn out is still an open question for me. I think the devs had the vision of both player and town (which are player managed) specialisation, but that doesn't seem to have happened yet. There might be signs of it though. I am presently stuck trying to further level my armoring skills.  My crafting town has had its outfitting station downgraded (either by NPC Invasion or by conscious choice of the managing company, not sure) and I haven't made my way to a town which has a sufficiently high level one.Said central town (Everfall) however, does have maxed out resource processing stations though, so it feels more like a conscious choice from the managing company to control upkeep costs in keeping the crafting stations limited.

I think that they have, like a lot of developers before, vastly underestimated how fast players will go thru your content.

A friend of mine that plays this told me that the tax for in-game sales of goods to other players is around 60%. Is that true? :D No taxation without representation!

No I don't think so. There's a minimum of fees when you sell in the trading post. And with everyone churning through PVE content and getting shedload of equipment drops, it means in a lot of items you wouldn't make any reasonable money if you posted them for sale on the lower prices similar items are already posted on. Which clearly doesn't stop people from dumping shit on the market at a cost to them (which is stupid as you can get repair parts and some pennies by salvaging).

what's brutal is property tax. "Average" setting is 10% of purchase price per week. . A house with tax paid is a big advantage - fast travel to location every X hours, extra storage space, you can mount trophies to gain bonuses while playing (no idea how though, just bought my first house). But with prices in trading collapsed to rock bottom this level of tax is just punitively heavy.

I actually like that this is happening.

It means they are actually trying to create a real in game economy. They are failing so far, but I would expect them to fail at first when trying to do this, because it is really damn hard to pull off.

The only way to not fail is to just not care and don't bother, which is what most MMOs do. I think Eve is the only one I've seen with a truly "working" in game, player driven economy.

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

Salvaging and getting monetary rewards for pve quests and participating in pvp events seems to give me more than enough coin.

I think the main problem with the economy is a player does not really need to buy much of anything.  And especially if a player is willing to put in the time to gather/craft - which I think a lot of players do.  So not much demand for goods being produced.

Eve worked well because players needed a lot of things that they could not obtain without participating in the market.

Berkut

So far crafting has been a waste of time for me. And I freaking LOVE crafting.

I cannot make anything better then what I can buy for almost nothing off of the trading house. IN fact....it isn't even close.

Very different experience for me.  I can easily craft things as good or better than what is on the market.  I don't bother with it.
