No sympathy to those who die of covid because they thought covid wasn't a potential big deal.

"It's only the flu" idiots get what they deserve.

It hits a bit home because there's a family relation back home who is in his mid-30s a fairly fit, and definitely reasonable guy who is basically the only person I know back home who refuses to be vaccinated. I know he has been badgered by most everyone in the family about it so I am not planning to "intervene" myself but the thing just puzzles me. Only thing I can think of is he had some prior issue around getting vaccinated for something, because it is totally not like him, but the reasons have not reached me through the family rumour mills.

I've seen that here too. There's a big overlap between fitness freaks and anti vaxers. My cousin who is anti vax is a gym obsessive.
I guess there's an overlap in sources of information. The nhs doesnt exactly tell you how to maximise your muscle gain and cut fat to unsafe levels whilst weird alternate health sites, which may have little concern for fact as long as things seem to work, do.

Part of it could be stubbornness.  Once you fall into the rabbit hole of thinking that you're more discerning and rationally skeptical than most people about something, the fact that the sheeple do what sheeple do in trying to convince you to become one of them doesn't exactly make you question your stance.

The problem with thinking that you're smarter than most other people, whether justifiably or not, is that you lose the compass of social feedback.  Obviously stupid people aren't going to see things the same way you do, that's why they're stupid.

I think there is definitely something to anti-vax/fitness freak - especially of the crossfit variety - venn.

People who live on protein shakes being weird about "what goes in their body" etc.

Quote from: garbon on August 04, 2021, 09:59:33 AMAs it is such a common story these days (basically templated script for anti vaxxer who dies of Covid) , my sympathy has been dulled.
Fucking hell - his sister Jenny McCann who did cooperate with the Mail in doing the original story to encourage people to get vaccinated (since picked up in the Guardian, Times etc) is now having all her social media accounts targeted by anti-vaxxers and they're alleging she's being "paid by the government" :bleeding: :ultra:

The crossfit folks I know are all double vaccinated.

The lowest vaccinated cohort here are East Europeans at 75% compared to 90+ for everyone else. Most common issue seems to be just be getting the day off, (construction workers, etc), babysitting issues and fear of being off the clock for a couple of days if they have a strong immune response. Seems to be scheduling issue more than some internet caricature anti-vaxx. Each country probably has their own local and unique vaccine demographics. :hmm:

Finally was able to get an appointment for a vaccine on the 23rd

Nothing available earlier in SK?
Well, better than nothing!
They're only managing about 364k doses a day. I think one on of the problems is a lack of the specialized refrigerators that the vaccines need.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

I think its more about the type of people who get into fitness fads/cults.

I think Cel mentioned this but I am really uncomfortable that we're planning booster shots while vaccination levels are so low in other parts of the world

I feel like we should sign up to the WHO recommendation that there are no booster shots here until every country has at least 10% vaccinated.

That's a false choice. These are mature processes by now. Manufacturing capacity isn't the bottleneck. Money is.

If vaccine manufacturers are not ramping up production to serve the entire world is because nobody is paying them to, not because Europe and the US keep buying doses.

Yeah, it feels like putting on a scarf while everybody else is still walking naked.

Tyr's cousin may not be a good sample of people who regularly go to the gym.  ;)
