You will never lose money by betting on the British public being mind-blowingly authoritarian  :bleeding:

Women want me. Men want to be with me.

Death by firing squad and then toss their corpses off the cliffs of Dover.
Quote"This is a Russian warship. I propose you lay down arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed & unnecessary victims. Otherwise, you'll be bombed."

Zmiinyi defenders: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

Bird watchers should get lighter penalties.

Good. Then don't lie.
"there's a long tradition of insulting people we disagree with here, and I'll be damned if I listen to your entreaties otherwise."-OVB

"Obviously not a Berkut-commanded armored column.  They're not all brewing."- CdM

"We've reached one of our phase lines after the firefight and it smells bad—meaning it's a little bit suspicious... Could be an amb—".

Eddie Teach

OTOH B4 being authoritarian blows no one's mind.
To sleep, perchance to dream. But in that sleep of death, what dreams may come?

DGuller

The government wouldn't have to be authoritarian if people just obeyed all laws and rules.

Interesting - economists looking and mapping the pandemic "Zoomshock" in London. I imagine it's basically the same in all big cities - and just wonder if this ever goes back. It feels unlikely right now.

Modern abstract church windows can be nice, but they're not as awesome as medieval ones.

London property prices do look set to go down quite a bit. In particular those vast areas of little but office in the centre.... What will become of them?
But good news overall. More access to London jobs for people living elsewhere. Just watch however as the Tories manage to claim this as thanks to brexit and their promise to level up the north....

This is my big question - what happens with all that office space? It won't all become smaller bases plus swing-space/co-working because almost by definition companies won't need as much. But they're not really designed for other types of use so? :hmm:

As if them being sub-par buildings for residential purposes will prevent them being turned into residential buildings. :P

I am fairly certain the last 2-stories block of flats we lived in was originally an office building. It wasn't great by any standards but the location was neat.

But I am not sure how it will go for offices.

The pandemic has sure hastened their demise, but I also expect a lot of people needy for external validation or desperate to get time off from their families ( :P ) will do a big rush back to the offices once they can. So the immediate feedback employers can potentially receive is that offices are here to stay. Let's hope not, though. :P

During the Summer-Autumn "return to the office" the only people in my firm who returned to the office on a regular basis were all of the partners. I make no judgement

This is a fair point. But surely to make money back on buildings built as prime commercial space they'd need to be turned into very good residential buildings, no?
