Apparently the far right are big on insisting they aren't far right?
This where their support is from?

They like to call themselves "unashamed right". Anyway, they weren't fooling anyone.

This picture went viral on election day:

Party representatives in a polling station near Barcelona. Spot the dude belonging to the far right party.

VOX fielded as candidates some former generals that had recently signed up a manifesto defending Franco's legacy. There's not much that can be done to hide things like that. The only candidate they withdrew was a Holocaust denier historian.

It is almost surreal that anybody would have voted for these guys after WWII.

They got 2,5 million votes. That said, it was far less than most polls suggested, and their presence in congress will be ultimately inconsequential. I will enjoy watching them squirm impotently while we pass socially progressive laws during the next 4 years.

The mainstream right party (PP) has also got the worst results in their entire history while trying to appeal to far right voters, so I hope that also prevents them from going down that road and ultimately go back to being a corrupt, moralistic, but ultimately bland and boring conservative party, instead of a Spanish version of the GOP.

Concur to the nth degree. The election results can be criticized in many ways, but I really hope that the main lesson to be extracted is that there's no electoral future going hard right over here. For a while there was a certain "pride" in the Spanish exceptionalism of having no far right party in our parliament, but that didn't mean that there were no far right voters, only they were considered to be a relatively small fringe and basically represented by the more extremist wing of PP. Now those voters have a party that caters to them, instead of having to join PP's big tent to get into power. It will remain to be seen how they do in the future, they might be here to stay, or they might wither if they don't get some wins here and there in the near future. The local and European elections in a month will be another important test.

The liberals (guy that doesn't look like major appleby) have a decent showing and almost surpass the conservatives.

57 seats out of 350? Not bad guy-who-doesn't-actually-look-like-Major Applewhite.

So...did Inés win?

She finished fourth Barcelona (a bad result for her, it has to be said), but that's enough to secure 4 seats in that constituency, so she'll be in the Spanish parliament.

Overall the liberals gained 20-something seats and finished a mere 8 seats and 0,8% behind the conservatives. I think they will try to become the main opposition party during the next electoral cycle. We have another big election in one month (European, regional, and city councils).

The Cortes just got a little more fabulous.

Though I feel like she should have stayed in Catalonia.

If the Liberals and the Spanish Bernie Sanders people ally they will have an absolute majority. But you say the Liberals don't want that. Tell me more.

I share the sentiment. She did a great job here, despite the bad result this election - and there are reasons for that, unionists are generally lefty (since they are majorly working class, while separatists are a majority in wealthier quintiles) and her party tacked too much to the right. She also played attack dog and she's too lovely to pull that off

Regarding a socalist-liberal deal. Well, that would be the favorite deal among the Spanish establishment, and Brussels would probably like it too. But for starters there's lots of personal enmity between not-major appleby and Spanish Bernie Sanders. Also their electorate are very much against any kind of deal with separatists (the party was indeed born in Barcelona as a hardline unionist party, until it went national in the 2010s with a liberal platform), while the president is in favor of a deal within the Spanish constitutional framework (an attitude that is not universally shared among the socialist electorate and leadership, has to be said).

The Larch

There are rumours that she might not take posession of her seat in parliament in order to stay in Catalonia, right?

In an unsurprising move, the far right party and their army of internet trolls are banging the STOLEN ELECTION! drum. They demand a full recount of the entire election, which is not legally possible (which they will probably use to feed their victim loop).

God, they are boring.

No!

For the languishites, on the day of the election Vox's official account shared this picture, depicting them locked in battle against the enemies of Spain: feminists! communists! separatists! left wing media! gays!

To represent gays they created a picture of a gay ghost. I guess they wanted to represent the spectre of homosexuality haunting Europe? Problem is, the thing is absolutely adorable:

So the thing backfired spectacularly since "Gaysper", as he's been christened, has been appropiated by the Spanish LGBT community and gone viral as a LGBT icon.

It seems one of Super Mario Bros' ghosts.

I'm looking forward to all the related merchandise they'll create with it. I hope they create a whole ghost family, one for each sexual orientation. I believe there's already a Bi ghost around.
