Pick all that apply. For me, I attend a poetry open mic where I help on occasion with back end stuff, but I usually prefer reading chap books or compilations in a quiet room.

I'm mostly curious to see how open mic does for popularity; it seems like "slam poets" are almost universally hated, but I've noticed our attendance dropped off dramatically when we did away with slam at our venue (thankfully, most of the "drama" went with them, though).

My friend used to make me go to spoken word performances to support her. :(

open mikes can be really fun or a relative waste of time. you never know what you might be getting. but if you don't show up, you never win.

I always disliked poetry until I actually heard poets read poetry. english class failed me in so mnay ways, and this was one of them.

I have an old anthology of the great poets that I thumb through every now and then. Haven't written poems myself since high school.

 Of course, you need to make sure you hear "poets" read poetry, not "slam poets." They tend to wiggle more, try to sound "edgier," and will twist into painful contortions for the sake of an internal rhyme scheme or alliteration. ;)

I'm a poet.

And a good one at that, if I may say so myself.

I'm a poet.

Roses are red
violets are blue
I dump animal carcasses down wells
because I'm a psycho Jew

Isn't exactly poetry.

One of the most confusing points in my school life was when a teacher explained to us what a poem was.  I raised my hand and asked "but what is the point?".  That drew laughter from the whole class

Pffft, Siege frequently makes very poetic posts, especially when he's loaded.

Though, you did get the subject matter down.

heh. weird categories... voted open mic even though I don't go often these days. But my stuff is best when read aloud actually.

Just methods of getting one's poetry fix, plus a couple to weed out bias from poets. Forgot Internet, but I'd just consider it either compilation or chap book, based on the nature of the site.

I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

Josquius

I don't like poetry. Its a unfinished song.
