I think Bluesky is currently in the phase of life where the masses haven't arrived yet, which makes it useful for the kind of specialist discussions that Minsky enjoys.  Since it seems to be turning into a bit of a homebase for the left, I would imagine that it'll get worse over time.  And at some point they'll have to let the bots in so that they can boost their user numbers and scam dumb-money advertisers (who are the currency that social media operates on).
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

I've seen some business like Wizards of the Coast now have accounts.

I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

Also the American right has shown itself to be morally and intellectually bankrupt so not sure said absence is a negative.

If home of the left means absence of the idiotic right, I'm OK with that

Bluesky seems pretty good, better than I ever remember twitter being.
You do get some people who are quick to block at the slightest contrary view and of course the original people there were more likely to be those who dislike Musk which means left of centre.
I have seen quite a few right wingers there though. Really wouldn't say its a left wing echo chamber.

It actually reminds me of the early days of Twitter when there was a lot of useful content posted by thoughtful people.

It remains to be seen whether it is a natural law of the Internet that all public spaces must turn into right wing dumpster fires.

This.

Indeed. Even the so called moderates and small c conservatives have nothing to show for the past 20 years than to stand aside while the far right takes over their space.

The Minsky Moment

Neil has a point, the right doesn't have a monopoly on vapid stupidity and useless spam, they just have a strong competitive advantage at the moment in the USA. My hope is that it gets big enough to keep all the contributors I care about and not so big that it gets drowned in the Gresham's law of internet crapola.

It's a negative because echo chambers blind you to political reality.  It's so much easier to overreach when you're part of groupthink.

I don't use social media but even if I did, I don't think I'd want to use it as my news source, rather than just a place to socially pass the time.* YMMV.

*not incidentally like how I use Languish

I didn't say anything about news.  Just the opposite, I meant getting a pulse of what and how people think, whether you approve of it or not.

Zoupa

My main purpose in using twitter is ridiculing tankies and vatniks along with fundraising for Ukraine. Bluesky has no tankies/vatniks (especially gvt/institution accounts) and the userbase is not big enough to fundraise off.

I don't think getting news from any social media is particularly smart, so I don't use it for that.

Problem with using social media to guage pulses is you'll get the impression that everyone has arrhythmia, rather then just the fringes and extremes that use it to voice their opinions most often and loudest.
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Well and if using say Instagram, that everyone else is a model and perpetually on vacation.
