Steve Jobs made wonderful and delightful consumer electronics, innovated entire new categories of products, and was a terrible human being to everyone in his personal and professional life.

Bill Gates copied and stole his way to a computer monopoly, but by all accounts is generally a very nice man and his philanthropy is saving the lives of millions of people.

Jobs >>> Gates in terms of influence on electronics and computers.
Jobs <<< Gates as a human being.

I was going to credit Jobs with putting internet on phone, but then wondered if the Blackberry already did that.

Lots of people put internet on a phone, but every single implementation sucked hard.  iPhone design is what made it usable.

It works, and what more it has influenced numerous companies to move to a more closed model as well (just look at the supposedly "free" Android).  And while Microsoft has moved to embrace open-source software now, it sure as hell didn't during Gates' reign.

That's a fine opinion to have.

I just don't see how it makes Gates look any better in comparison.  Microsoft under his watch was notorious for trying to control your computing experience.  Do the words "embrace, extend, extinguish" not mean anything to you?
