What is the highest position a former president can be, politically speaking? Can he run as a senator or representative? Can he be on a VP ticket in later elections?

Valmy

As far as I know he can be anything but President and Vice President.

Not sure how this works if he somehow becomes Speaker of the House and then the President and VP get taken out.

I presume he can pretty much name his office in Illinois if he wants to continue his political career at some point.

I think there's some question as to VP, but an ex-President could run for any other position under the sun.

The most famous post-Presidential job was Taft being appointed to the Supreme Court.  Typically though most presidents just retire, even if younger like Bill Clinton or GWB.

I get the feeling Obama won't. He'll take a year or two off and them he'll be back. Just a hunch though. Maybe for the midterms?

Some might say John Adams serving in the House.

He can become Speaker, he would just be skipped over if the Presidential line of succession came into play.

Michelle hates D.C. though. Can't see her agreeing to it.

I think one of the requirements to being VP is meeting the requirements to be President. So that would rule Obama out right?

Even then that was not a political career really. The most famous post-Presidential politician was John Quincy Adams. It has been awhile.

Governor of Illinois then. Obama '18.

I really don't see the logic any of you are displaying in somehow thinking that after all the bullshit, the obstructionism, the Party of No-ism, the basic family upheaval in general, etc., that Obama would honestly think that, going forward, elected office--any office--is going to be the pathway for him to participate in effecting change. Stop it.

Meh.  He's pretty much said he's going to use his ex-Presidential status to help organize Democrats at state and local levels (where the party has taken a serious beating during his Presidency).

I want to see the Obamas spending their time with youth and communities at the local levels while behind closed doors trying to keep the DNC from being stupid.

  Couldn't Teddy Roosevelt qualify?
