Privately, it was a pretty good year, but at the same time it feels like the world is slipping into madness.

Same, privately it's been really good but overall what a shit year. Deaths of music greats, Syria, Trump, Portugal winning Euro.
And I can't help but feel 2017 will be worse.

Duke sometimes gets so excited with schadenfreude that he misspells a few words.

Yeah.  Unfortunately, the reason this year was a very bad one is because it set us up for some pretty bleak years in the near future.  The worst of humanity has won big everywhere it fought, and it's poised to show us why it's the worst of humanity.
