Both sound good to me. As to forgetting, we still know of Caligula, Nero, Domitian, and Commodus. With someone as obsessed with their name and image being everywhere, I can think of no more fitting punishment for him than removing his impact via those methods and, as Jake says, removing his and his cohorts' wealth.
"Everything that brought you here -- all the things that made you a prisoner of past sins -- they are gone. Forever and for good. So let the past go... and live."

"Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did."

We still remember the Emperors who had damnatio memoria, they have lengthy pages on Wikipedia

Everyone knows the first two and people with a passing interest in Rome know the second two. No one knows  other shitty emperors like Caracalla or Honorius. Striking them from history makes historians curious about why  Egyptian history has a similar phenomenon.

So wealth confiscation is best. Although I still think tiny penis statues would annoy him more :P

Caracalla still has his baths (and just looking apparently the modern buildings it inspired) and Honorius gets to feature in British History with that supposed break up letter to the Romans in Briatin.
"I've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off."
I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

Well yeah, people know of them. I mean I do and I'm not a great historian :D thinking more so on the grand scale of popular knowledge. You don't think 100 years from now people won't be interested in the only president who people tried to erase from history?

Assuming that the trend of terrifyingly crappy presidents doesn't continue,  which isn't exactly guaranteed
