Yeah this has been playing out in Hungary for the past 15 years. If your much stronger democratic institutions won't save you, then your only chance of getting rid of MAGA is getting to near economic collapse.

Yeah that has been my sad conclusion after the 2024 election. We managed to escape Trump 1 with minimal damage. But now we won't escape without a complete disaster. Which will happen sooner rather than later.

Only total failure will save us from fascism.

I really hope Walz doesn't give in. I wouldn't have considered it even a few months ago, but he's been looking and sounding defeated for a while now.  :(

The recent scandal kind of took the wind out of him. I mean on the scale we are currently operating under, simply failing to stop criminality instead of actively doing some seems quaint.

However, he seems like he doesn't want to be there anymore. You got to be tougher than that.

He's been abandoned by his party.  Not just the leadership, but the supposedly progressive base.

If you're not perfect, you're worthless for the Dems.  Where as the GOP will love you even more when you lie, cheat, rape women or children, embezzle money, steal from the poor to give to the rich.  The only sin they will not tolerate is a profession of atheism or a love of Allah.  Well, you can buy your way out of your love of Allah.  Especially if you like to buy nice&shiny military toys.

He was dealt a serious blow during the presidential campaign when the party told him to tone it down.

Then he began making townhall meetings, but not only did the party refuse to support him, but AOC wing got on his back for losing the presidential campaign and not being progressive campaign.

Then the Republicans began attacking his disabled son and no one from the party defended him.  Not even the supposed progressive.  Only his daughter took to social media to defend both of them.

And the last straw was the scandal.  Dems told him to resign in not so many words because he was a distraction. I can't remember the AOC wing of the party rushing to his defense or even trying to counter punch the Republicans.

Dems are way too busy at fighting one another to mount any kind of effective opposition.  They see one another as more dangerous than Trump.

Well that is hysterical nonsense. Sure the Dem party might have told him to cool it, but they did the same to Kamala. Yes the party ran a shitty campain. Maybe he was pressured to not run for re-election to secure the important governorship of Minnesota. But I am not aware of that last part.

But the idea this is some kind of war and there is bitter fighting against Walz or that the progressive base has turned on him is ridiculous. They are disappointed in what they perceive is him not fighting hard enough but that is it.

That is a pretty weak sauce war. The Republicans also run against each other and rip each other to part in primaries. Much more extreme than this weak sauce stuff you are characterizing as some kind of bitter civil war.

When the accusations started coming, no one came to really defend him outside of his state.  He was aiming for a presidential run, and it got convenient that he was embarrassed.

Ilhan Omar phrased her defense toward the Somali community more than toward Waltz himself.

Summer Lee aimed her critics had an attack on the social security net, not specifically about Waltz integrity.

I think it reflects on the division of the left of center politics.

Attack a Republican on his integrity?  All his supporter rush to his defense with accusations of fake news.

And once the primaries are done, they all kiss the ring.  And all their supporters go back to supporting the new leader and mocking the old challengers.  Like the cultists they are.

The Minsky Moment

I thought Walz's press conference yesterday was really solid.  He came out strong without losing his cool.  And finally, Minnesota state officials are flat out committing that they will enforce the law and investigating crimes committed against their citizens where federal personnel are the perps. No more deference.  It's pretty clear Trump and Noem have been trying to goad him into saying or doing something extreme and Walz was right and smart not to take that bait.  On the contrary, he's rope-a-doped the Feds into taking increasing hysterical and irrational stances that have eroded national public opinion even further.
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

No one except, you know, AOC who has gone to town halls with Walz and regularly appears with him on social media.

I have no idea what your point is, here. Omar criticized the Republican majority on the oversight committee for making the issue about race, which had nothing to do with Walz. Lee was criticising the Republican majority on the oversight committee for falsely characterizing the fraud as an illegal immigrant issue, when it was carried out by US citizens. She additionally pointed out that the fraud was discovered by the Biden administration, not the Trump administration (which, she had noted, fired the Inspector General who had uncovered the fraud and then never replaced him or the numerous other IGs Trump fired).

Yeah, but so what?  That's been the case for decades. It happened with Nixon, in fact.

The situation with Nixon is actually a good case study why the the world pre-social media was a better place.

In the end, even the staunch supporters of Nixon had to admit defeat and Nixon had to leave office because all of the news networks were reporting what he had done wrong. There were no social media bubbles for supporters to escape to. But more importantly news organizations had the funding necessary to uncover the truth. With the advent of social media that advertising money goes elsewhere and news organizations are woefully underfunded.
