This love of tariffs baffles even a left-winger like me.

It makes perfect sense. Trump, and his supporters, are extremely xenophobic and think all foreigners are inferior and suspect...and probably dangerous criminals or conspiring to screw the United States.

So Trump wants to build a giant wall to insulate us form foreigners.

American Conservatives seem to hate and fear the entire world outside of the 1-2% that are them.

I have no idea if a boat like that could make the journey or not, and honestly it is kind of irrelevant.  This isn't a warzone, it's not like Afghanistan or Yemen where we couldn't reasonable just pick up the guys up.  This is what the Coast Guard does everyday.

I think "warrior" culture and mindset around defence in the US is bad for America's military, but also possibly plays a part in soldiers later joining the police and their issues.

I prefer to think of modern armed forces as highly trained professionals. "Warriors" are rabble like ISIS or Hamas who always get completely buggered when they encounter a professional force.
