Ivanka found Trudeau attractive. It's as good an explanation as any.

Is there any concrete demands towards Mexico and Canada from Trump regarding the supposed reasons, e.g. fentanyl or migration?

Not to my knowledge, no.

No, I mean it's Trump. And even if he had them, you can't trust him to not change the demand whenever he feels like it.
Canada and Mexico know this, the only thing they can do is hit back and hope it won't escalate further.

Their goal must be to give some token concession so that Trump can celebrate victory and removes the tariffs again. Escalation seems a lose-lose situation, where Canada and Mexico lose more than the US.

That's what you would do with a rational actor. How do you deal with a toddler given the reigns of power?

It feels like you still do that on the hopes that his attention gets distracted elsewhere. I don't see how you outlast him by tormenting him.

I don't think we'll stay in that phase. The mood isn't really there to give an inch, or a finger

Canada, Mexico and China have an extraordinarily large share of US trade; about 50%. If he slaps tariffs on the EU as well the USA will be the first country to sanction itself  :P

(Though I think Albania may have done that first  :hmm:  , back in Hoxha days)

My worry is that, the world's reflex learned from his first term is that a Trump presidency is an elderly toddler being in charge of largely sane and responisble people so if you weather the mood swings you'll be fine.

And that might still be true but what's more likely is that this time around the toddler is in charge of crew of incompetent people with no morals.

And I am hoping it's just me not consuming US news sources but it feels like the opposition is in utter apathy.

I don't know... It feels worse and more sinister than his first term.

worse still would him being in charge of competent people with no morals... Which may very well be the case

The vibe is that the first time they were feeling their way forward, this time it's about doing maximum damage.

Yes, like the last time he imposed tariffs on Canada, he has to bring himself within a national security risk. The security risk he has identified this time is the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants sent into the country.

There is of course no connection between the tariffs and the flow of fentanyl, but I don't hold my breath that the US justice system is going to curtail his acts.

What about that is concrete?  That's the fig-leaf justification ('security') that he's using to take executive action to bypass the free trade agreement, but nothing concrete has been asked.  There's nothing Canada could do and then point to as having met his terms, because it's not designed to be achievable.
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.

Trump posted on Truth Social that the USA doesn't need anything from Canada. That it has forests and oil and other resources.

That comes as a fucking surprise to Québéc. It only took 200 fucking years to kick the Lumber Barons out and stop the strip cutting out forests and using the francophone population as indentured servants. Sure looks like you needed some stuff from us.
