A whistleblower has lodged a complaint that forced hysterectomies are being performed in an ICE facility (one being run by a for-profit corporation) detaining asylum seekers and migrants.

"hysterectomies are performed on asylum seekers". Imagine reading that about an other country and tell me it is not some dystopian sounding fascist shit.

Ah, but these are forced hysterectomies.

I think it is horrifying. I'm not sure I'd take the example a horror show at a private detention center and build that up as yet another reason not to visit the given country ever again. Of course, I also don't think I'd build more than a few reasons to not visit a country (let alone 35 million ;)).

Also the 'wtf happened to you guys?' seems naive as I don't believe forced sterilization ever fully went away.

While a search on google (for pages 2000 to May 2020 so as not to cover this incident) only mentioned countries like India and Uzbekistan when searching 'forced hysterectomy' it does appear that 1970s/1980s had many surgical forced sterilizations in many countries (including the US) and in the 21st, there appear to be countries that still have forced sterilization of the disabled. And then getting a little laxer (though probably not for the individuals affected), into the 21st century many European nations still required sterilization (so coerced sterilization) for transgender individuals wanting to legally change their recorded sex.

Actually, they were not forced hysterectomies, either.  The women were seeking medical treatment.

The actual complaint, sans all of the hysterics that people here so live, is that a single contract doctor used by the Irwin County Detention Center, has possibly been over-zealous in performing several hysterectomies as a treatment for women's heavy menstrual cycles or pain.  The complaint also notes that the same doctor once removed the wrong ovary from a woman.

Now, this is bad, of course, but hardly unprecedented in any country.  If it keeps Zoupa away it's not a dead loss.  Let's see where the investigation leads.

If people want to worry, they should worry about President's trump's persistent efforts to undermine Federal whistle-blower protections to make sure that his precious "swamp" doesn't get drained.

Quote[...]

"You go to Austria," he said, "you go to Finland, you go to many different countries, and they don't have — I was talking to a head of a major country, and he said, 'We're a forest nation.  We consider ourself a forest nation.' This was in Europe. I said, 'That's a beautiful term.'

"He said, 'We have trees that are far more explosive..." – he meant "explosive" in terms of fire – 'but we have trees that are more explosive they have in California, and we don't have any problem because we manage our forests.'"

Mr Trump reiterated much of his rambling monologue the next morning during a 40-minute-plus on-air phonecall to Fox & Friends.

"You know, In Europe they have forest cities," he told the hosts. "You look at, you look at countries, Austria, you look at so many countries, they live in the forest, they're considered forest cities, so many of them.

"And they don't have fires like this, and they have more explosive trees. They have trees that will catch easier. But they maintain their fire, they have an expression, they 'thin the fuel', the fuel is what's on the ground, the leaves, the trees that fall, they're dry, they're like a matchstick."

I swear he brings up the Finnish thing and the idea that they rake their forests every time there's a fire. This is not the first time he's said this stuff - I'm certain

Although - in no way crediting Trump's "point" which is not really accurate - I read a piece about forest management in, I think, California that said it is a big issue in why they have so many fires. I also think the fact they rely on convict labour to help the firefighters probably doesn't help in getting them under control. Leading to particularly dystopian headlines like this: "California severely short on firefighting crews after COVID-19 lockdown at prison camps".

PDH

The forests in California are mostly National Forests, controlled and run by the Federal Government.  Management of these forests is up to the Administration.

The firefighters respond to the fires, and the prison labor is indeed important.  The plan was to train trustee prisoners to fight fires, so that they could learn an in demand skill, change their environment, and potentially get jobs.  However, pressure from the various interests made sure that people with guilty pleas could not become firefighters after prison - this has just been (finally) changed, where the ex-cons can ask judges to change their plea so that they can now be employed.

THAT was a fucked up bureaucratic mess, but it had to do with union interests, red tape, and basic pig-headedness of some elected officials who fought the program from the start.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
