The Economist's headline piece is on the end of Conservatism.  Trump's tweet could not have been better timed to illustrate their point that principled right wing politics based on traditional values is being replaced by nationalist populist right wing politics.

I'm a real Burkean conservative, we are indeed a dying breed. Trump isn't one of us and never has been. He's just an imbecilic reactionary.

Unfortunately, so are most of the conservative voters.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

I'm sure Republicans have come out condemning Trump's tweets, though, right? Right?

lmao

Well, my sister shared a FoxNews story that complains about Democrats not condemning protesters who defaced the American flag and raised a Mexican one at an immigrant detention center. So I guess they're even? :P

Unfortunately, so are most of the conservative voters.

The reality is that traditional conservatism isn't an easy majoritarian position, and it historically had to work hard and make alliances to win power in the United States. Left-leaning populism is historically at least, in the last 100 years, an easier sell. Starting in the mid-70s the GOP got in bed with radicals who primarily fell in two somewhat overlapping buckets: apocalyptic, lunatic evangelical Christians, and middle and low income whites who dislike brown people. For a time the party was able to simply use these rubes if you will to provide votes, but mostly to keep promoting policies more in line with traditional conservative thinking. By the late 2000s it was obvious the rubes were gaining control of the party, a process accelerated with the 2010 midterms and fully realized with the dual historical events of traditional boring conservative Mitt Romney losing to a black man in 2012 and one of the richer and more famous of the rubes (DJT) taking control of the GOP almost top to bottom.

People like me are out in the wilderness in a political winter of sorts, one that is likely to last much of the remainder of my life I suspect.

Trump said something politically incorrect again. I guess that means we should support the party that harbours open racists and anti-semites like these women instead.

It's less than 48 hours since AOC and Pelosi were having it out so naturally Trump just poured gasoline on the whole thing, forcing Pelosi to come to the their defence and keeping them even more in the spotlight.  :hmm:

Did he? How exciting.

Nah. You should support the Democrats instead.

I do find it interesting that the right has moved from criticism of Israel == anti-semitism == anti-American.

The Minsky Moment

And yet Ilhan Omar's supporters aren't shooting up synagogues.
It's nice to see GOP types waving the Star of David instead of muttering about the Rothschilds (although see: Conspiracy Theories - Soros, George) but I'm a lot more concerned about well-armed Nazis in America then what city in Israel the US embassy can be found.

You're imputing a logic to his actions that doesn't exist.

Trump is just the senile old racist guy in the bar ranting about the "coloreds" and the foreign talking people.  Except all of America is now the bar and there is no way to just walk away and ignore the old fool.

I condemn the tweet.

Hell, I'm conservative enough that I don't even like the idea of a President being on Twitter in the first place.  But if anyone here doubts my contempt for Trump at this point, I don't think they'll ever notice it.
