so, would it be mandatory or voluntary? if mandatory, you'd get some crying orwell. if voluntary, tons just wouldn't do it and you'd lose (likely democratic) voters

then of course there's the cost vs. reward discussion

Who is this question for? My recommendation is simply make the Voter Registration Card also a Photo ID. I do not see why that would lose voters or bring up Orwell, since last I checked people already had Voter Registration cards.

Ah. In their case it is mandatory. It may be perfectly politically possible so long as you mention how it helps keep illegals out and keep voter fraud down.

I don't know how voter registration works because ND doesn't require it. do you have to physically go somewhere or can you do it all by mail / online?

Is ND pushing for a photo ID law for voting? If not then it wouldn't apply. This is just a suggestion on how states who care about voter fraud might counter it. If you do not even require registration then clearly you barely care if Canadians flood over to vote.

I wasn't saying whether it was possible to implement. I was looking at the consequences

Since you mentioned accusations of Orwellianism and cost vs. reward discussions you can see why I thought you were addressing political debates involving implementation.

I have a hard time believing this.  You mean I could drive up to ND on election day and they'd hand me a ballot?

It seems so. They are the only state with no registration.

QuoteTrump Administration Orders Communications Blackout For US Scientists
(...)
The EPA, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Transportation and the National Park Service – all of which contain thousands upon thousands of taxpayer-funded scientists – were told a few days ago to cease and desist any form of communication with the public and the media when it came to their research.

Although still allowed to publish in scientific journals, any reference to their work in any other form would have been banned. News releases, photographs, infographics, fact sheets, and any social media content on Facebook, Twitter, and elsewhere would be prohibited in any form, according to the memos.

They did not explicitly reference President Trump or his new administration, but this is the only authority such a widespread gagging order could have originated from. However, at the time of writing, the administrator of the scientific wing of the USDA rescinded this muzzling order.

There's no update as of yet on whether or not the other federal agencies have decided to fight back against this information suppression.

It's worth noting that these agencies ramped up their investigations into climate change and environmental protection under the Obama administration.(...)

Although many US governments have to some degree ordered scientists to keep quiet about certain research topics (particularly during a government changeover, as seen during the Bush-Obama transition) the speed at which the Trump administration is apparently seeking to muzzle America's scientists is astonishing, to say the least.

"To our knowledge, there is not a precedent for large-scale communication freezes like this," Gretchen Goldman, research director for the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists, told BuzzFeed News.

Apparently after this was made public yesterday at least the USDA has lifted the ban.

I've read such blackouts are somewhat common for new administrations
