I love that now a president 'calling for something' via a tweet generates an article...

There'll be more communication from him though Tweets than through any other means of communication.

At the same time, until there is a step actually taken...? Most of that article is just a re-hash of yesterday's news.

My position has always been if a state cares so very much about it, just made voter registration cards also be photo IDs. Boom. Done. Free for everybody who has a voter ID. Existing cards can be grandfathered in (because everybody loves Grandfather clauses in voting type situations) just the next time they vote they get their FREE picture on their registration card.

When is that photo being taken?

When they vote.

I would consider this possibly a good thing, even if possibly a waste of federal money, just to shed some light on this contentious issue. But I have a weird feeling that this is mostly something to mollify Trump's ego.

Oh well. If it is going to happen maybe something good will come of it.

If he wanted to do something to insure his re-election via a change in rules, how would he proceed about it since it's a State's responsibility?

Which reminds me, the sacred ground argument is annoying. What, religion is all of a sudden a valid argument?

Sacred Ground and the Lakota is still a sensitive topic after that Black Hills thing.

It's not even their Sacred Ground.  The pipeline isn't being built on land that ever belonged to the Lakotah.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I am well aware the situation makes no sense.

He couldn't. His investigation would have to pressure the States into action if it found anything I presume.

How does that work? So we all have one election where people can show up without ID and then get an ID? What happens if they lose that - can they get another? Who is keeping track whether or not someone has already been given an ID?

And apologies for missing that you initially said they get at voting booth. -_-

Different note: I don't think I have a voter registration card. :hmm:

Is Iowa City such a hotbed for radical leftism that you feel the need to point out your credentials?  :P

Yes.

If you had mandatory ID cards you would not have all this shit.

I am all for personal freedom, but if there are basic functions of your state linked to being able to identify who is an eligible citizen and who isn't, maybe it would make sense to have a mandatory system? With an ID card you would have one that would fit all similar purposes.

Does any nation with a population as large as ours have mandatory IDs? This is a legitimate question.

Pretty much. You get 'Grandfathered' in. Free and clear ID for you.

Um if they lose it? What happens when you lose your Drivers License? I guess the same thing?

What is presently around to keep people from registering twice? Or having two passports? Or two driver's license?

The new voters have to get theirs when they register.

it can mean carnage in america, but it doesn't have to mean that. because it doesn't have to mean that, "'American carnage' isn't 'carnage in America'" is true

  I love that you can actually bring yourself to write such nonsense rather than acknowledging that trump, as usual, was lying through his teeth (this time, in order to sound tough).  Where do you think "American carnage' is occurring, if not "in America?"  In Australia?  Antarctica?  Aruba?

Funny because the same Texas Party whose platform is calling for stringent voter ID laws, is also demanding the census simply record the number of people and NO OTHER INFORMATION. If we cannot record who is a citizen then how exactly are we supposed to regulate voting in some way?

Anyway having a photo ID required for voting is pretty much the same thing as having a photo ID required for citizenship.

Dude. You don't have to tell me. I have devoted my entire career to transitioning us to a clean and renewable energy system. The fucking leftists are terrible allies just for that reason.

We need natural gas as an important transition fuel. But damn do they get idiotic about fracking. Did they ever go after Clinton for not being an insane nutcase about fracking or what? It is not like we are going to be fracking forever but we need to frack now. For awhile.

And the fucking birds and the wind turbines.

The perfect must always be the enemy of the good.

But if this kind of leftism somehow justifies other insanity then our country is doomed. Because those people are not changing their ways, they seek moral purity.

We don't have to demand that the radicals stop being radical. That is a hopeless task.

We do have to start ignoring them however, and being radical ourselves about absolutely stomping on the tendency to shut down the conversation by moderates who have convinced themselves that their credibility is somehow linked to being intolerant of dissenting viewpoints.
