Orban today quoted Trump saying something about being ok of people/nations putting themselves first. He is very happy about this because "By this we [as in, the nation] have received permission, from the highest secular place, to put ourselves first. This is a great thing, a great freedom, a great gift".

Orban doesn't really understand the concept of sovereignity if he thinks that him putting Hungary first somehow necessitates tacit approval from Donald Trump.

Orban's just using Horthy's interpretation of putting Hungary first.

...which just by chance I am sure, lines up exactly with Putin's goal of returning global political interaction to a 19th century model of "Great Powers" trying to align their spheres to best suit them.

it's been known for awhile that trump has a 19th century view of the world re: foreign policy

Perhaps in terms of seeing the international arena as a competitive pursuit of national interests.  The problem is that Trump is really bad at it.  He gives comfort to America's worst and most dangerous foes, and sows confusion and disunity among America's friends.

it could be possible had america dropped its goodwill intentions post-collapse of the USSR, it could dominate the world with an iron fist, eventually obtaining a greater result than the goodwill route.

maybe we'll see!  :)

Yeah, but then Hungary has basically always been someone's little buddy so not surprising that he couldn't step toes forward all by himself.

What it means in Hungary's context is that every time they did some "sovereign" stuff like eliminating checks and balances, or, in one case, going overboard with the tribute they wanted to ask from a US company for continued business, they got bad looks and comments from the US embassy.

They believe this is now over, and they can do whatever the heck they like without receiving criticism.

Imagine Trump  was a conscious agent of the Russian government.  How would his actions differ from what he is actually doing?

They would be less obvious?

Well then he's likely mistaken. Trump isn't going to want Hungary doing anything that might hurt the US or its businesses. Has he not being paying attention?

The Dutch have a pretty good take on this, I think: https://youtu.be/ELD2AwFN9Nc

Everyone seems to be able to do a good Trump impression.  I was able to do a halfway decent Obama and good Clinton, but just can't come close to a Trump.  My attempt at Dubya always sounded like Ross Perot.
