If there was a political will to change that, you could. It's not rocket science.

It's not rocket science, but it would be a fundamental shift in the way our government is structured.  It's not "like" 51 elections, it is 51 elections to determine electors, and it explicitly says that each state, not the US constitution, governs how the process is run.

What you're talking about is getting to be considered a Pandora's Box- yes, we have amendments to the constitution, but so far, they have been to expand past the initial body, not to overwrite it.  The thinking is that if one piece of our constitution can be voided that easily, any part of it can.  There have been tons of bills proposed to recommend that amendment, but unless something catastrophic happens (which is a non-zero chance with the current administration, admittedly), that particular potato will remain too hot to handle.

Probably for the best. Nieto meeting Trump would have been a comedy of errors.

Holy shit. Nieto, Trudeau, and Trump. Has there ever been a worse threesome running North America?
I don't know enough about Mexico...

Nieto is a corrupt buffoon. His approval ratings are hitting record lows.

Edit: Though snubbing Trump might give him a boost.

Based on bullshit during the campaign and what he and his cronies are now doing there in power, I've got a fairly good view of what a Trump presidency will be like.

How do you others feel it?

And if so, has the thread run its course?

Maybe a thread rename or a new one for this administration, might I suggest 'Trumpland' ?
I said what I think during the campaign.  Grumbler and Berkut said I was ignorant as fuck, and others chime in to say Trump didn't really mean all he said and anyway, checks&balances would stop him from doing any real, long lasting damage.

Grumbler said the damage would be very limited, actually.  So I don't know why he seem so worried lately about this new administration.  It's only a rocky 8 years to go (Trump has trademarked his 2020 campaign slogan), everything will be back in order by 2024 with things going on as if nothing ever happenned :)

Worst case scenario, we lose CdM as he dies from lack of proper medical care, but no one really cares about sick people, they don't make America great.  Garbon is already somewhat safe, Minsky can move to Germany, Yi might be mistaken for the reincarnation of Elvis but certainly not for an asian anchor baby, Valmy could still emigrate to France or Quebec and Grumbler will be protected by his +10 shield of Checks&balances, so all is good.  No worries.

Is Trudeau that bad? Honest question, Canada is very low on my "countries whose politics I follow" list.

it goes beyond border, all the world is united by their negative feelings toward the US :P

Or the French.

Why so much hate for the two things I love the most :weep:

I used to like your country.  Planned to take some vacation there sometime in the near future.  Now, I'm looking at alternatives.

Probably for the best. Somebody might mistake you for an immigrant and lock you up.

But that case, if I understand correctly, was limited to denying funds appropriated by legislative act based on terms *within* that legislative act, and even THEN it was decided on narrow grounds.

This is a EO denying funds allocated by legislation outside of the legislation entirely. That cannot possibly be legal on any grounds at all.

If Congress passes a law that says that cities get a million dollars each to replant trees in their parks, how can the President just create a EO saying "No, they don't get those funds" or "No, they don't get them unless they do XY and Z"?

I don't think he can, and I don't think these EOs mean anything at all. A four year old could challenge them in court.

What I've been hearing is the missing piece of the puzzle is that the EO can only affect agencies under the executive branch.  To your example, Trump couldn't say "they will not get that funding," but he could say no DOJ grant money could be used to pay for police costs incurred during the project, or he could bar the National Park Service from offering advice if the cities chose to consult with them.  Or he could bar the EPA from reporting on the environmental impact of planting those trees while the local initiatives are still being debated before being voted on.

In my opinion he is in completely over his head. He is making pretty groan-worthy mistakes.

But I suppose he does have fans on this board so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I also thought he was goofy and only in his office because of his father so I might have a bias.

He is the best of the trio for what it's worth.

Edit: I was really looking forward to making fun of him during his tenure but then my country...well...did what it did so now even that is taken from me. God Damn America!

Santa Anna at various times overlapped with Van Buren, Tyler, and Pierce.  Don't know who led Canada back then but they would have to be truly awesome to counteract that.
Canada wasn't an autonomous country then, only distinct non united British colonies.  There was no prime minister, only a Lieutenant governor appointed by the British government.

Where they particularly incompetent Lieutenant Governors?

Which just shows how divorced from reality the immigration laws are. If they were enforced as written the economy of a very fast growing region in the country would be hamstrung.
I'm convinced the many Republican voters of West Virginia always dreamed of cleaning toilets in Malibu.

While Van Buren was President, Lower Canada didn't have a LG.

There was no united Canada back then - just British North America.

And obviously still a joke-free zone.
