I wonder what all of those virtuous right wing Catholics who supported Trump think about this.

Even if they could fool themselves into thinking, Trump was a modern day Cyrus, they must be having at least some doubts that they got this one wrong.

Trump as a pedophile-enabling anti-Christ? :o
Yet a protestant pope should be of your liking.  :P Not as good as Martin Luther would have been, though, I'll grant you that.  :D

Why would I care?
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Are there no adults in the room anymore? They must know the whole world is laughing at the US right?

It's all WWE trash entertainment all the time now.

They have absolutely zero self-awareness, so they believe that the world public believes what Trump's bootlickers tell them.  It's kind of astonishing that Trump found so many pathological subs to serve him, given that he is no dom himself.

Except that Trump is no Protestant. His God, Moses, and Jesus are all named Donald Trump.

It seems to me that Trump's entire personality is basically an insatiable need to be the most special boy in the room. It doesn't matter if it's based on real respect, spending more money, lies, or "jokes" - but he has to be the centre of attention and "the most important" person.

If he achieves whatever attention he thinks is important at any given moment because he's never enough.

Given that, I wouldn't be super surprised if his attempts to pivot his follow into more cult-like / explicitly religious adoration in the future.

I don't think (hope?) a real personality cult is possible in America in this day and age.

But I believe in human social hierarchies the most dangerous thing is when you have a bad leader and sycophants underneath.  I've seen this at work with a micromanaging boss making bad decisions.  Those with minds of their own leave, and the ones presenting no ideas saying "yes I agree" every time somehow get promoted

Well you would think wrong. This guy has been worshipped by Americans since the 1980s.

I can't help but think of Ross Douthat's comment from 2016, if you dislike the religious right just wait till you meet the post-religious right.
Let's bomb Russia!

It's going to get a lot worse. The curriculum for high school students in Oklahoma for next year:

QuoteSocial studies standards require high school students to examine 2020 election 'discrepancies'.

Among the changes, the new version of one section of the standards says high school students should "Identify discrepancies in 2020 elections results by looking at graphs and other information, including the sudden halting of ballot-counting in select cities in key battleground states, the security risks of mail-in balloting, sudden batch dumps, an unforeseen record number of voters, and the unprecedented contradiction of 'bellwether county' trends."

Human behaviour becomes increasingly undecipherable to me. Why are these folks bending over backwards for a dude that'll be dead in 5 years, tops. What is the purpose here?

I don't think it is really about Trump.  It is about rejecting reason in favor of the emotional high these people feel whenever they get a chance to put their boots on the neck of intellectualism.  Let's face it:  if you can believe in an invisible superfriend, you can believe in anything.
