Looks like there may be some pain in the US meat industry shortly:

QuoteUS meat trade days away from getting 'kicked out' of China

Hundreds of abattoirs in the United States are at risk of being banned from exporting meat to China, because their China export licences are due to expire this weekend.

According to the US Department of Agriculture some beef, dairy, pork and poultry exporters have already had their registrations lapse and there had been a "lack of response by China Customs" to its requests to have the situation rectified.

"The expiry date for several hundred more US establishments is in March and April and [China Customs] has not responded to US government facility registration renewal requests," it said in statement.

US-based Global Agritrends director Brett Stuart said export licences issued five years ago were meant to auto-renew, but that was not happening and it seemed to be on purpose.

"So what we're looking at right now in America, is waking up Monday morning and having $US3 billion ($A4.77B) worth of beef, pork and poultry no longer eligible to export to China," he said.

"We've been watching this for weeks wondering if it's a glitch in the system, or is this a result of trade friction?

"China has already imposed retaliation tariffs on US beef, pork and poultry and it's very easy for them to sit by and not answer the phone.

What does this mean for Australia?

Mr Stuart said last year the United States sent 170,000 tonnes of beef to China that would need to find another market.

"All of the sudden the only grain-fed beef on earth that China can buy is from Australia — so it's not bad news [for Australia's cattle industry]," he said.

"That demand for grain-fed beef will heat up quickly."

ABC Landline understands this week saw an uptick in orders from Chinese importers, looking to lock in Australian grain-fed beef.

The ABC approached the Australian Meat Industry Council which represents a large number of meat exporters but the organisation said it was watching closely and seeking more information before it comments.

Mr Stuart said he had spoken to multiple US exporters and traders this week who were "very nervous".

"It's a de-facto ban [by China]," he said.

Yeah he wants to strip away birthright citizenship so that kid will probably not remain a citizen for long.

Or...not. I don't know. It's legal Calvinball. Maybe they will just randomly deport US citizens now.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Would it have been better to separate the parents from the child?

I think the parents should be permitted to take their kid with them if they want. But deporting a US citizen?

But I wasn't there. Maybe that is what happened.

No, it would have been better to look at the uncommon/rare situation for what it was and grant an exception to let the family stay together in the US until the daughter's cancer recovery was completed.

Also, the fact that we have Border Patrol checkpoints well inside the U.S. that mostly seem to exist to slow down freeway traffic and ask people to affirm if they are citizens (which I am pretty sure 99.9% say "yes", and likely are) and hope to get lucky with a brain-dead person that says "no")...should have been tossed long ago as the brain-dead idea that it is.

Target resources at border crossings that negatively impact on border communities and undocumenteds with criminal records. Not long-term residents with no record and citizen kids.  This is basic enforcement priorities 101 that every admin follows until this clown car rolled up to the DC.

This happened because they used a kangaroo court* expedited removal procedure that is normally used to target people caught entering or shortly after.  Only one Presidential administration has ever applied to this procedure to long-term residents.  This one.

*Kangaroo court is an exaggeration, there is no review or oversight of any kind.
