Citing grizzlies, education nominee says states should determine school gun policies

Washington (CNN) — Betsy DeVos, President-elect Donald Trump's education secretary nominee, said it should be up to states whether guns are allowed in schools, citing grizzly bear protection as part of her answer.

She also said she would support Trump if he moved to ban gun-free schools zones, a position he advocated on the campaign trail.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, who represents Sandy Hook, the site of the 2012 school shooting, asked DeVos if she believes guns have "any place in and around schools."

"I think that is best left to locales and states to decide," she said.

After Murphy pushed DeVos about why she can't say definitively whether they belong, DeVos brought up a story Sen. Mike Enzi told earlier about a school in Wyoming that has fences around it to protect against grizzly bears.

"I will refer back to Sen. Enzi and the school he is talking about in Wyoming. I think probably there, I would imagine there is probably a gun in a school to protect from potential grizzlies," she said.

Kind of goes hand in hand with the silencer er...hearing preservation bill. Wouldn't want to disturb the kiddies studies.

The Schadenfreude is still going fairly strong :)

Yeah, I noticed

It should have burned itself out sometime in December.  But you guys... :P

 You know what "schadenfreude" actually means, right?

Really? I thought we were getting better. Everybody seems to want to reduce interventionism now after the Iraq debacle.

I believe he's talking about it's symbolic role in society, that kind of thing.

Nothing of the sort, even though it probably is reassuring for you to fall back on the old tired tropes in uncertain times.

It had nothing to do with "The best global policeman" of the world. I know the good old American isolationism fetish is alive and kicking, and it always had a voice in American political discourse.  What I find worrying is the support for military within the US as military, as opposed to the expression of American spirit found in its other institutions or in civil society. It is the valuation of military as the strength and power that should befit America, whereas diplomacy, civility, is weak and politics is morally bankrupt. Coupled with the general discredit in which most other American institutions seem to have sunken in, I find that worrying - and find that expressions of dissent, on this particular matter, are becoming increasingly thin. The whole rhetoric of the US owing their freedom to the troops is especially disconcerting.

Trump isn't wearing a ring in the picture above.  :hmm:

Did the russian hooker pee party push Melania over the edge, or did the ring just slip off his tiny tiny hands?
