When Trump wins reelection this year I wonder if he'll start pushing for a constitutional convention.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

The Minsky Moment

That would require both some basic understanding of the contents of the constitution, and some level of concern over acting in accordance with the constitution, neither of which applies.

Indeed. And Trump can do as he pleases now. Who would stop him?

You'd think that wouldn't you?  But Trump has expressed his desire to be President for life and there are already several movements in this country pushing for a new constitutional convention.  I know this idea is out of left field but I could see a situation where advisers tell him that he could have a third term (and maybe jail journalists he doesn't like or maybe alter birthright citizenship), if he would take up the constitutional convention cause.

I'm not terribly worried about Trump winning a majority in the House and Senate and ratification by 3/4 of the states legislatures.

I think it is useful to go back to the origins of this thread and confront all of our beautiful 2015 certainties about American political process.

Dozens of states have already passed laws requesting a convention.  Plenty of Democrats want this as well.

Good point.  Or rather, series of points.

Razgovory

God damn it.

I meant to write that several Dozen states have already passed bills asking for a Convention, and the idea has some support among Democrats as well.

So what?  You still need 3/4 of states to ratify any changes to the Constitution.

In a Constitutional Convention?  I thought it just needs 3/4 states to request one, and then we get an  unlimited, free-for-all constitutional reboot that will likely (in this day and age) descend into a giant turd of a grandstanding shit-show.

If we ever actually get a CC, we're probably fucked.

2/3 to request, still need 3/4 to ratify.  Chillax.  The Constitution is designed to be impossible to change and Trump is not going to change that.
